DNA fingerprint patterns of Pasteurella multocida from the same turkey farm on the same and different years.

The DNA fingerprint profiles of 126 isolants of Pasteurella multocida from 41 turkey farms in Missouri were analyzed after digestion with the restriction endonuclease HhaI and compared with their somatic antigenic type. The goal was to determine if the same isolant of P. multocida was reisolated from the the same farm during the same and consecutive years and after an interval of one or more years. Of the 37 pairs of P. multocida collected during the same year from the same turkey farms, the DNA fingerprint profiles were the same with 26 pairs (70.3%) and different with 11 pairs (29.7%). Of the 33 pairs of P. multocida collected during consecutive years from the same 22 turkey farms, 21 pairs (63.6%) were the same and 12 pairs (36.4%) were different. Of the 15 pairs of P. multocida collected with an interval of one or more years between them from the same 14 turkey farms, only four pairs (26.7%) were the same and 11 pairs (73.3%) were different. There did not appear to be any relationship between the DNA fingerprint profiles and the typing of their somatic antigens because, although 44 pairs of isolants had the same DNA fingerprint profile and somatic antigenic type, 42 pairs differed in these parameters when all pairs were combined.

A practice-based, randomized, controlled clinical trial of a new resin composite restorative: one-year results.

This study evaluated the performance of a low-shrinking resin composite compared with an amalgam for restoration of Class I and II cavities of moderate size in posterior teeth in a general practice setting. Fifty-two pairs of test and control restorations were placed in 49 patients. Clinical evaluations and assessments of replica models were carried out at baseline, six months and one year. Patients recorded their level of satisfaction with the restorations by means of visual analog scales. Apart from one control restoration that failed due to a fractured cusp, all of the restorations reviewed at six months and one year were intact with no unacceptable scores for any of the evaluation criteria. It was concluded that the resin composite evaluated, when used in conjunction with the recommended adhesive system, may be an appropriate alternative to amalgam in the restoration of posterior teeth over one year in clinical service.

Menstrual disorders. Premenstrual syndrome, dysmenorrhea, amenorrhea.

The nurse practitioner, with skills in clinical management and concern for the psychosocial and emotional well-being of clients, is in a unique position to intervene on behalf of those who suffer menstrual disorders. Premenstrual tension, dysmenorrhea, and amenorrhea are discussed with attention to patient education, as well as to diagnosis and management.

Serotypes and DNA fingerprint profiles of Pasteurella multocida isolated from raptors.

Pasteurella multocida isolates from 21 raptors were examined by DNA fingerprint profile and serotyping methods. Isolates were obtained from noncaptive birds of prey found in 11 states from November 28, 1979, through February 10, 1993. Nine isolates were from bald eagles, and the remaining isolates were from hawks, falcons, and owls. Seven isolates were members of capsule group A, and 14 were nonencapsulated. One isolate was identified as somatic type 3, and another was type 3,4,7; both had unique HhaI DNA fingerprint profiles. Nineteen isolates expressed somatic type 1 antigen; HhaI profiles of all type 1 isolates were identical to each other and to the HhaI profile of the reference somatic type 1, strain X-73. The 19 type 1 isolates were differentiated by sequential digestion of DNA with HpaII; four HpaII fingerprint profiles were obtained. The HpaII profile of one isolate was identical to the HpaII profile of strain X-73. Incidence of P. multocida somatic type 1 in raptors suggests that this type may be prevalent in other wildlife or wildlife environments.

Pasteurella multocida isolated from wild birds of North America: a serotype and DNA fingerprint study of isolates from 1978 to 1993.

Serotype and DNA fingerprint methods were used to study Pasteurella multocida isolated from 320 wild birds of North America. Isolates were collected during 1978-93. The HhaI profiles of 314 isolates matched the HhaI profile of somatic reference type 1, stain X-73; somatic type 1 antigen was expressed by 310 isolates, and the serotype of four isolates was undetected. Differentiation of the 314 isolates was observed by digestion of DNA with HpaI. None of the HpaII profiles matched the HpaII profile of X-73 (designated HhaI 001/HpaII 001). Three HpaII profiles were recognized among the somatic type 1 isolates: HpaII 002 (n = 18), HpaII 003 (n = 122), and HpaII 004 (n = 174). Profile HpaII 002 was found among isolates collected during 1979-83. Profile HpaII 003 was identified from isolates collected during 1979-89, with the exception of two isolates in 1992. The HpaII 004 profile was identified from isolates collected during 1983-93. Of the six remaining isolates, four expressed somatic type 4 and had HhaI profiles identical to the somatic type 4 reference strain P-1662 profile (designated HhaI 004); these isolates were differentiated by digestion of DNA with HpaII. One isolate was identified as serotype F:11, and another was serotype A:3,4. In the present study, 314 of 316 (99.4%) isolates from wild birds in the Central, Mississippi, and Pacific flyways during 1978-93, were P. multocida somatic type 1.

DNA fingerprint analysis of standard, intermediate, and variant antigenic types of Salmonella enterica subspecies enterica serovar Gallinarum biovar pullorum.

DNA fingerprint profiles and antigenic types of 150 Salmonella enterica serovar Gallinarum biovar pullorum field isolates and seven reference strains were evaluated. Field isolates were submitted to the National Veterinary Services Laboratories (NVSL), Ames, Iowa, between Oct. 1, 1990, and Aug. 20, 1991. Three antigenic types (standard [n = 96], intermediate [n = 50], and variant [n = 4]) were identified among the field isolates. The NciI fingerprint profiles of all field isolates were identical. Differentiation of field isolates was observed by digestion of DNA with HpaII; three profiles were recognized. One HpaII profile (designated SP HpaII 001) was common among 144 isolates (standard, n = 90; intermediate, n = 50; and variant, n = 4); the remaining six pullorum standard type isolates were equally dispersed between two HpaII profiles (designated SP HpaII 002 and 003). Three antigenic types were identified among the seven reference strains (reference strains 11, 17, 19, and 20 [standard]; reference strain 4 [intermediate]; reference strains 79 and 296 [variant]). One NciI profile was recognized; two HpaII profiles were observed. Six reference strains (11, 17, 19, 20, 79, and 296) had profile SP HpaII 001, and reference strain 4 had profile SP HpaII 002. No correlations were established between DNA fingerprints and antigenic types.
