Meeting the health needs of homeless or low-income persons: role of the nurse practitioner.

Providing health care for homeless or low-income families presents many challenges and rewards. Nurse practitioners are in a unique position to make a positive impact on the health needs of this population. However, they need to think about the ramifications of their approach, assessment techniques, and intervention strategies to optimize the health care offered. We share our experience in working with this population and lessons we have learned from review of the literature.

Care of the patient having radical neck surgery or permanent laryngostomy: a nursing diagnostic approach.

The patient who undergoes head and neck surgery requires intense nursing management for successful recovery and rehabilitation. Although several authors have presented a nursing diagnosis format care plan, none is as extensive as the one presented here. It is hoped that the preceding nursing care plan will be helpful to nurses in their management of the patient undergoing head and neck surgery.

Effects of meditation and aerobic exercise on EEG patterns.

This study examined the effects of two stress-reducing wellness activities, meditation and aerobic exercise, on electroencephalogram (EEG) patterns of normal subjects. Ten nursing students completed the study: five performed meditation daily and five performed aerobic exercise daily. Stress was determined using the Stanford University Self Assessment and Holmes-Rahe Social Adjustment Rating Scales prior to the stress-reducing activities and again following the six-week study. Although neither group demonstrated a significant increase in alpha waves, self-rating scores for both measures were improved at the end of the six-week study. Meditation and aerobic activity were associated with a perception of increased ability to cope and a generally positive feeling about the value of exercise and meditation in their lives.

Hospital-based transtelephonic arrhythmia surveillance.

Significant numbers of persons who have cardiac arrhythmias are living in the community following diagnosis and/or hospitalization of their potentially life-threatening condition. Living with these adjustments in life-style offers challenges to these patients and families. These authors describe an arrhythmia surveillance developed to link the patient with outpatient cardiac monitoring, diagnostic information, and patient education.
