A collaborative research project on Therapeutic Touch.

The current shift toward granting funds for collaborative research proposals means that graduate nursing students must be prepared to participate in the collaborative research process. The authors describe how master's and doctoral students worked together with faculty to establish group norms, investigate, design, and disseminate a research proposal on Therapeutic Touch. Project goals, description of group members, and the benefits and limitations of collaborative research also are included. Evaluating the collaboration as a challenging yet enjoyable learning experience, students and faculty shared a successful scholarly endeavor that ultimately led to funding and implementation of a research proposal on Therapeutic Touch.

Dissociative identity disorder: a feminist approach to inpatient treatment using Jean Baker Miller's Relational Model.

Women diagnosed with Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID) may experience episodic crises characterized by intense states of disconnection from self and others. Crises which result in potential harm to self/others may require inpatient treatment. With economic emphasis on shorter lengths of stay, a treatment program or model which focuses on the DID patient's sense of connectedness to self and others can enhance treatment efforts during brief inpatient hospitalizations. The Relational Model of Jean Baker Miller uses mutuality and empowerment within the therapeutic relationship and inpatient mileu to move the patient beyond therapeutic impasse/crisis toward a state of greater connectedness to self and others.

Public health initiatives in cancer prevention and control.

Cancer-related health-care costs in dollars and in human lives are staggering. Reduction of cancer mortality depends largely on the access of the public to cancer prevention and control programs. Efforts by the federal government such as passage of the National Cancer Act and congressional appropriations have been important contributions. The national commitment to cancer prevention and control is evident through goals and programs of the National Cancer Institute, the Department of Health and Human Services, the American Cancer Society, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Prevention is also a focus of nursing organizations and industry.

Therapeutic ritual. Helping families grow.

1. Family development can be inhibited by lack of social or family rituals to facilitate life cycle transitions. Therapeutic rituals can be used to help families mobilize their resources for healing, growth, and change. 2. A therapeutic ritual can help a family to resolve conflicts and resentments, to negotiate new roles and relational boundaries, and to develop new shared meanings among its members about their ongoing life together. 3. The success of a therapeutic intervention is influenced by the nurse-therapist's understanding of the family's culture, values, and needs, as well as familiarity with the directive nature of strategic therapy concepts on which therapeutic rituals are based.
