Working together for success.

Administrators and Directors of Nursing usually believe they are doing the right thing when they begin to implement an ergonomic program such as safe resident handling. However, as time goes by, and the program fades, they may wonder where they went wrong. The commitment, planning, and follow through between "management" and "employees" when a safe resident handling/minimal lift program is implemented is an essential, but often overlooked, part of an effective ergonomic program. The best of programs can fail unless there is an ongoing effort by both to insure that the following goals are achieved: (1) safety for the caregivers, (2) safety for the residents, and (3) improvement or maintenance of mobility of the residents.

Ergonomics↗

Physical stresses related to the safe handling of residents.

Ergonomics is based on the concept that there are inherent physical/mental capacities of the human body. This article will review various physical stressors as they relate to the capacity of the human body during handling (lifting, transferring, moving, and walking) of residents. When those stressors exceed human capacities, either from a single event or from multiple repeated events, there is an increased potential for errors, accidents, and injuries for both caregivers and residents, and a concomitant decrease in caregiver productivity. Ergonomic job design seeks to minimize those stressors. Fairly simple changes may add up to a significant reduction in ergonomic hazards with an improved resident quality of care and an improved quality of life for employees.
