The molecular recognition of tetra(p-t-butyl)tetrathiocalix[4]arene and its derivatives to heavy metal ions.

The molecular recognition of tetra(p-t-butyl)tetrathiocalix[4]arene (I)and its three derivatives to heavy metal ions has been investigated by UV spectroscopy and solvent extraction. These derivatives include 5,11,17,23,-tetra-t-butyl-25,26,27,28-tetrakis(acetylmethoxy)tetrathiocalix[4]arene (II), 5,11,17,23-tetra-t-butyl-25,26,27,28-tetrakis(2'-hydroxypropyloxy) tetrathiocalix[4]arene (III), 5,11,17,23,-tetra-t-butyl-25,27-bis(3'-hydroxy propyloxy)tetrathiocalix[4]arene (IV). The UV spectra and solvent extraction of I show that it has an effective molecular recognition to heavy metal ions, especially to Cd(2+), while IV has a special molecular recognition to Ag(+) ion. These results confirmed the feasibilities for I to be applied in separation for toxic heavy metal ions Pb(2+), Cd(2+) and IV to be used as the sensor compound of Ag(+) ion-selective electrode.

Up-regulation of p75 neurotrophin receptor (p75NTR) is associated with apoptosis in chronic pancreatitis.

Activation of apoptosis in chronic pancreatitis has been demonstrated. The low-affinity neurotrophin receptor p75 (p75NTR) mediates apoptosis in many cell types in vivo and in vitro. The aim of this study was to examine whether p75NTR is involved in the apoptotic process in chronic pancreatitis. The quantity and localization of the receptor was evaluated using northern blot analysis, in situ hybridization, immunohistochemistry, and western blot analysis. Apoptosis was determined by TUNEL assay. By northern blot analysis, p75NTR mRNA levels were increased 40-fold in chronic pancreatitis compared with normal pancreas (P < 0.01). In situ hybridization revealed weak p75NTR mRNA expression in some ductal cells in the normal pancreas. In contrast in chronic pancreatitis moderate p75NTR expression was present in acinar cells next to fibrosis, ductal cells, and cells of ductular structures as well as in some islet cells. Immunostaining of p75NTR in normal pancreas and chronic pancreatitis tissue samples showed a similar intensity and distribution pattern as found by in situ hybridization. Higher p75NTR protein levels could be confirmed by western blot analysis, which revealed an 8.6-fold increase of p75NTR in chronic pancreatitis. TUNEL staining showed, in chronic pancreatitis samples, positivity in some acinar cells next to fibrosis, some ductal cells, and cells of ductular structures. Also some islet cells were positive by TUNEL staining. The presence of p75NTR immunoreactivity was positively correlated (P < 0.05) with the apoptotic index in the exocrine and endocrine pancreas. In conclusion, p75NTR, the low-affinity receptor of neurotrophins which mediates apoptosis, is up-regulated in CP and is involved in the apoptotic process of the exocrine and endocrine pancreas.

Accuracy and precision of the amadeus microkeratome in producing LASIK flaps.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the accuracy and precision of corneal flap thickness following laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) performed using the 140-, 160-, and 180-microm heads for the Amadeus microkeratome (AMO, Irvine, CA). SETTING: The study took place at the Cullen Eye Institute, Baylor College of Medicine, Houston. METHODS: In this prospective study, using the Amadeus microkeratome, LASIK flaps were cut in 51 right eyes and 50 left eyes with the 140-microm head, 25 right eyes and 25 left eyes with the 160-microm head, and five right eyes and one left eye with the 180-microm head. The same microkeratome blade was used for bilateral cases with the right eyes always undergoing surgery first. Eyes were grouped by order of blade use for statistical analysis. The effect of preoperative corneal thickness, keratometry values, blade oscillation and translation speeds, and blade reuse on flap thickness was evaluated. RESULTS: Mean flap thicknesses were 153 +/- 18 (range 97-187 microm) OD and 134 +/- 25 microm (range 79-174 microm) OS for the 140-microm head; 182 +/- 26 microm (range 105-220 microm) OD and 163 +/- 29 microm (range 105-216 microm) OS for the 160-microm head; and 235 +/- 24 microm (range 198-258 microm) for the 180-microm head. Flap thickness was significantly thicker for the first eyes cut (right eyes) and was positively correlated with increasing corneal thickness in both eyes. For the first eyes cut, flap thickness was also significantly thicker than the labeled thickness specified by the manufacturer. CONCLUSIONS: With the Amadeus microkeratome, LASIK flap thickness correlated with central corneal thickness for the 140-microm head. Reuse of the microkeratome blades produced significantly thinner LASIK flaps on second eyes cut.

Neurokinin-1 receptor expression and its potential effects on tumor growth in human pancreatic cancer.

The neurokinin-1 receptor (NK-1R) and its ligand substance P (SP) are involved in the pathogenesis of certain neural tumors. Because nerves are significantly altered in pancreatic cancer, evidence for alteration of this pathway in human pancreatic cancer was sought. Expression of NK-1R was analyzed by real-time quantitative RT-PCR, in situ hybridization, immunohistochemistry, and Western blot analysis in normal human pancreatic and pancreatic cancer tissue samples and in pancreatic cancer cell lines. Furthermore, the influence of SP analogs and of the NK-1R antagonist MEN 11467 on pancreatic cancer cell growth was analyzed by sulforhodamine B (SRB) assay. By real-time quantitative RT-PCR, NK-1R mRNA was increased 36.7-fold (p < 0.001) in human pancreatic cancer samples compared with normal controls. Enhanced NK-1R expression levels were not related to tumor grade but were associated with advanced tumor stage and poorer prognosis. By in situ hybridization and immunohistochemistry, NK-1R mRNA and immunoreactivity were only occasionally weakly present in acinar and ductal cells in the normal pancreas. In contrast, moderate to strong NK-1R mRNA signals and immunoreactivity were present in most cancer cells. By Western blot analysis, NK-1R was increased 26-fold (p < 0.01) in pancreatic cancer samples in comparison to normal controls. NK-1R mRNA was detected in five pancreatic cancer cell lines by real-time quantitative RT-PCR, with the highest levels in CAPAN-1 cells and the lowest in ASPC-1 cells. SP analogs stimulated pancreatic cancer cell growth, depending on the NK-1R expression level, and this effect could be blocked by a selective NK-1R antagonist. These findings illustrate that the NK-1R pathway is activated in human pancreatic cancer and has the potential to contribute to cancer cell growth, thus suggesting the existence of a neuro-cancer cell interaction in vivo.

Molecular analysis of Cryptococcus neoformans mitochondrial cytochrome b gene sequences.

Mitochondrial cytochrome b genes (cyt b) of 40 strains of Cryptococcus neoformans were partially sequenced to determine the genetic relations. With the exception of the type strain of C. neoformans var. neoformans, all strains contained introns in their sequences. Analysis of 386 bp of coding sequence from each strain under investigation revealed a total of 27 (6.99%) variable nucleotide sites and categorized isolates of C. neoformans into nine cyt b types. C. neoformans var. gattii included cyt b types I to V, and C. neoformans var. neoformans comprised types VI to IX. cyt b types were correlated with serotypes. All strains with cyt b types I, IV, and V were serotype B. All other strains except IFM 5878 (serotype B) with cyt b types II and III were serotype C. Serotype D strains had cyt b types VI and IX, and serotype A strains were cyt b type VIII. Of four serotype AD strains, one was cyt b type VII and the remaining three were type VIII. The phylogenetic tree based on deduced amino acid sequences divided the strains only into C. neoformans var. neoformans and C. neoformans var. gattii. These results indicate that cyt b sequences are effective for DNA typing as well as phylogenetic analysis of C. neoformans.

Ala/Thr(201) in extracellular loop 2 and Leu/Phe(290) in transmembrane domain 6 of type 1 frog gonadotropin-releasing hormone receptor confer differential ligand sensitivity and signal transduction.

Recently, we have identified three distinct types of bullfrog GnRH receptor (designated bfGnRHR-1, bfGnRHR-2, and bfGnRHR-3). In the present study, we have isolated three GnRHR clones in Rana dybowskii (dyGnRHR-1, dyGnRHR-2, and dyGnRHR-3). Despite high homology of dyGnRHRs with the corresponding bfGnRHRs, dyGnRHRs revealed different signaling pathways and ligand sensitivity compared with the bfGnRHR counterparts. Activation of dyGnRHRs with GnRH stimulated cAMP-mediated gene expression. However, dyGnRHR-3 but not dyGnRHR-1 and -2 induced c-fos promoter-driven gene expression. Consistently, dyGnRHR-1 and dyGnRHR-2 were not able to increase GnRH-induced inositol phosphate accumulation, whereas all bfGnRHRs and dyGnRHR-3 were, indicating that dyGnRHR-1 and dyGnRHR-2 are coupled to solely G(s), whereas all bfGnRHRs and dyGnRHR-3 are coupled to both G(s) and G(q/11). Moreover, dyGnRHR-1 and dyGnRHR-2 showed about 10-fold less sensitivity to each ligand than that of the bfGnRHR counterparts. Using type 1 chimeric and point-mutated receptors, we further elucidated that specific amino acids, Ala/Thr(201) in extracellular loop 2 and Leu/Phe(290) in transmembrane domain 6 of the type 1 receptor, are responsible for ligand sensitivity and signal transduction pathway. Particularly, substitution of Leu(290) to Phe in dyGnRHR-1 increased GnRH-induced inositol phosphate production as well as c-fos promoter-driven gene expression whereas substitution of Phe(290) to Leu in bfGnRHR-1 decreased those activities. Collectively, these results demonstrate the presence of three types of GnRHR in amphibians, and suggest species- and type-specific ligand recognition and different signaling pathways in frog GnRHRs.

Inhibitory effects of antisense RNA of HAb18G/CD147 on invasion of hepatocellular carcinoma cells in vitro.

AIM: To study the inhibitory effects of antisense RNA of HAb18G/CD147 on invasion of hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC) cells in vitro. METHODS: Antisense RNA of HAb18G/CD147 vector PCI-asHAb18G was constructed by reversely inserting HAb18G/CD147 cDNA to eukaryotic expression vector PCI-neo. The HCC cell line HHCC was transfected by PCI-asHAb18G via cation liposome. Expression of HAb18G/CD147 of transfected cells selected by G418 (geneticin) was observed by immuno-histochemical SP staining and FACS (fluorescence activated cell sorting). Gelatin zymography was used to determine the effect of PCI-asHAb18G on reducing secretions of MMP-2 and MMP-9 of the transfected cells. Boyden chamber was employed to test the invasion of HCC cells in vitro. RESULTS: The construction of antisense RNA vector PCI-asHAb18G was verified correct by partial nucleotide sequencing and restricted endonuclease digestion. The expression of HAb18G/CD147 in transfected HHCC was inhibited by PCI-asHAb18G. Secretions of MMP-2 and MMP-9 of transfected HHCC were reduced and the invasion of transfected HHCC was inhibited compared to HHCC, respectively. CONCLUSION: Invasion of HCC cells can be inhibited by antisense RNA of HAb18G/CD147. HAb18G/CD147 may be used as a potential target of drugs for anti-invasion and metastasis of HCC.

Isolation of a novel member of small G protein superfamily and its expression in colon cancer.

AIM: APMCF1 is a novel human gene whose transcripts are up-regulated in apoptotic MCF-7 cells. In order to learn more about this gene's function in other tumors, we cloned its full length cDNA and prepared its polyclonal antibody to investigate its expression in colon cancers with immunohistochemistry. METHODS: With the method of 5' rapid amplification of cDNA end (RACE) and EST assembled in GenBank, we extended the length of APMCF1 at 5' end. Then the sequence encoding the APMCF1 protein was amplified by RT-PCR from the total RNA of apoptotic MCF-7 cells and cloned into the prokaryotic expression vector pGEX-KG to construct recombinant expression vector pGEX-APMCF1. The GST-APMCF1 fusion protein was expressed in E. coli and used to immunize rabbits to get the rabbit anti-APMCF1 serum. The specificity of polyclonal anti-APMCF1 antibody was determined by Western blot. Then we investigated the expression of Apmcf1 in colon cancers and normal colonic mucosa with immunohistochemistry. RESULTS: A cDNA fragment with a length of 1 745 bp was obtained. APMCF1 was mapped to chromosome 3q22.2 and spanned at least 14.8 kb of genomic DNA with seven exons and six introns contained. Bioinformatic analysis showed the protein encoded by APMCF1 contained a small GTP-binding protein (G proteins) domain and was homologous to mouse signal recognition particle receptor beta(SRbeta). A coding region covering 816 bp was cloned and polyclonal anti-APMCF1 antibody was prepared successfully. The immunohistochemistry study showed that APMCF1 had a strong expression in colon cancer. CONCLUSION: APMCF1 may be the gene coding human signal recognition particle receptor beta and belongs to the small-G protein superfamily. Its strong expression pattern in colon cancer suggests it may play a role in colon cancer development.

Pancreatic cancer mortality in China (1991-2000).

AIM: To describe the mortality rate of pancreatic cancer and its distribution in China during the period of 1991-2000. METHODS: Based on the data of demography and death collected through China's Disease Surveillance Point System (DSPS) over the period of 1991-2000, the distribution of death rate of pancreatic cancer was described in terms of age group, gender, calendar year, rural/urban residence and administrative district. RESULTS: A total of 1,619 death cases attributed to pancreatic cancer (975 men and 644 women) were reported by DSPS during 1991-2000. The reported, adjusted and age-standardized mortality rates increased from 1.46, 1.75, and 2.18 per 100,000 populations in 1991 to 2.38, 3.06, and 3.26 per 100,000 populations in 2000. The majority (69.62 %) of the deaths of pancreatic cancer were seen in the age group of 60 years and older. The mortality rate was higher in men than in women, but the male to female death rate ratios decreased during the 10 years. Our data also showed that the death rate of pancreatic cancer in urban areas was about 2-4 fold higher than that in rural areas, and in Northeast and East China, the death rates were higher than those in the other 5 administrative districts. CONCLUSION: The death rate due to pancreatic cancer was rising during the period of 1991-2000 and the peak mortality of pancreatic cancer might arrive in China.

Morphological changes of cell proliferation and apoptosis in rat jejunal mucosa at different ages.

AIM: To study the changes of cell proliferation and apoptosis in rat jejunal epithelium at different ages. METHODS: Cell proliferation and apoptosis of the jejunal mucosal and glandulous epithelia from birth to postnatal 12(th) month were observed using immunocytochemistry (ICC), and TUNEL method. The height of villus, the thickness of muscle layer and the number of goblet cells in jejunal mucosal and glandulous epithelia were measured by BeiHang analytic software and analyzed by STAT. RESULTS: (1) Proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) positive cells of jejunal glandulous recess were found and increased in number from birth to the postnatal 3(rd) month. The number of PCNA positive cells peaked in the postnatal 3(rd) month, and decreased from then on. (2) The number of apoptotic cells also peaked in the postnatal 3(rd) month, showing a similar trend to that of the PCNA positive cells. (3) The height of jejunal villus increased after birth, peaked in the postnatal 3(rd) month and decreased from then on. The jejunal muscle layer became thicker in the postnatal 3(rd) week and the postnatal 12(th) month. The number of goblet cells of the jejunal mucosal and glandulous epithelia had a linear correlation with age. CONCLUSION: (1) PCNA positive cells are distributed in the jejunal glandulous recess. (2) Apoptotic cell number peaks in the postnatal 3(rd) month, indicating that cell proliferation and apoptosis are developed with the formation of digestive metabolism as rat grows to maturity. (3) The thickness of jejunal muscle layer increases to a maximum in the postnatal 3(rd) week, which may be related to the change in diet from milk to solid food. (4) The number of goblet cells increases rapidly in the postnatal 3(rd) week, probably due to ingestion of solid food.

Aberrant expression and deletion of FHIT gene in leukemias.

FHIT (fragile histidine triad) gene at chromosome 3p14.2 usually expresses at a very low level in human tissue and cells. A high frequency of abnormalities in FHIT gene has been demonstrated in various cancers. FHIT is proposed as a putative tumor-suppressor gene. To evaluate the expression of the FHIT gene in various leukemias, bone marrow or peripheral blood samples from 98 leukemia patients were tested by RT-PCR: 38 from patients with AML-[M(2)(9), M(3)(12), M(4)(8), M(5)(9)], 16 with ALL, and 34 with CML-[CP(20), AP(4), BC(10)] of various FAB types, as well as 10 patients with other hematological malignancies. To detect a deletion in sequencing the FHIT gene, the representative aberrant PCR products were cloned and then sequenced. The results showed that 22/38 (58%) patients with AML, 9/16 (56%) patients with ALL and 19/34 (56%) patients with CML were detectable of aberrant FHIT mRNA transcripts or deletion of FHIT. In 6 (16%) AML patients, 3 (19%) ALL patients, and 5 (15%) CML patients, the wild-type product was absent. Some patient's samples - 6 (42%) AML, 6 (38%) ALL, and 14 (41%) CML revealed aberrant FHIT transcripts in addition to a normal-sized band. Samples from healthy donors (PB, n = 12; BM, n = 5) did not indicate any abnormal expression. Eleven isolated fragments from various patterns of FHIT gene expression were investigated using cDNA sequencing. Sequence analysis revealed deletion of exon 4-8, exon 5-8, and exon 5-6 in various leukemias, as well as the deletion of the full FHIT gene sequence. The fused transcripts included: exon 3 and exon 9, exon 3 and exon 7, exon 4 and exon 9, exon 5 and exon 7. Sequence analysis of aberrant fragments present in samples from an AML and a CML patients was detected for point mutations and insert mutations located in exons 2, 8 and 10, plus a variety of aberrant transcripts. Deletion or aberrant FHIT mRNA transcripts in 50/98 (51%) leukemia patients were found. All samples with aberrant FHIT lacked gene product. A Kaplan-Meier plot of survival in patients with AML in relation to FHIT expression revealed that aberrance or loss of FHIT gene significantly correlated with a low clinical remission rate and poor overall survival.

[A study of PDE6B gene mutation and phenotype in Chinese cases with retinitis pigmentosa].

OBJECTIVE: To identify the mutation spectrum of phosphodiesterase beta subunit (PDE6B) gene, the incidence in Chinese patients with retinitis pigmentosa (RP) and their clinical phenotypic characteristics. METHODS: Screening of mutations within PDE6B gene was performed using polymerase chain reaction-heteroduplex-single strand conformation polymorphism (PCR-SSCP) and DNA sequence in 35 autosomal recessive (AR) RP and 55 sporadic RP cases. The phenotypes of the patients with the gene mutation were examined and analyzed. RESULTS: Novel complex heterozygous variants of PDE6B gene in a sporadic case, a T to C transversion in codon 323 resulting in the substitution of Gly by Ser and 2 base pairs (bp: G and T) insert between the 27th-28th bp upstream of the 5'-end of exon 10 were both present in a same isolate RP. But they are not found in 100 unrelated healthy individuals. Ocular findings showed diffuse pigmentary retinal degeneration in the midperipheral and peripheral fundi, optic atrophy and vessel attenuation. Multi-focal ERG indicated that the rod function was more severely deteriorated. A mutation was found in a case with RP in a ARRP family, a G to A transversion at 19th base upstream 5'-end of exon 11 (within intron 10) of PDE6B gene. A sporadic RP carried a sequence variant of PDE6B gene, a G to C transition, at the 15th base adjacent to the 3'-end of exon l8. In another isolate case with RP was found 2 bp (GT) insert between 31st and 32nd base upstream 5'-end of exon 4 (in intron 3) of PDE6B gene. CONCLUSIONS: There are novel complex heterozygous mutations of PDE6B gene responsible for a sporadic RP patient in China. This gene mutation associated with rod deterioration and RP. Several DNA variants were found in introns of PDE6B gene in national population.

[Screening gene mutations of the beta subunit of phosphodiesterase in the Chinese retinitis pigmentosa patients].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the mutation spectrum of phosphodiesterase beta subunit (PDE6B) gene and incidence in Chinese retinitis pigmentosa (RP) patients. METHODS: Genomic DNA was extracted from the blood samples of 38 patients from 35 autosomal recessive retinitis pigmentosa (ARRP) families and 55 sporadic cases. The mutation of the PDE6B gene was detected using PCR-SSCP, and the amplified PCR product of abnormal bands was sequenced. RESULTS: Within intron 10 of PDE6B gene, a mutation was found in an ARRP family, a G --> A transition at 19th base upstream 5'-end of exon 11. A novel complex heterozygous variant of PDE6B gene in a sporadic case, a T to C transition in codon 323 resulting in the substitution of Gly by Ser and two bp(TG) inserted between the 27th-28th bp upstream of the 5'-end of exon 10 were both present in the same isolate RP. But they were not found in 100 unrelated normal individuals. A sporadic RP was found carrying a sequence variant of PDE6B gene, a G to C transversion in intron 18, the 15th base adjacent to the 3'end of exon 18. Another isolate RP was found to have 2 bp inserted between 31st and 32nd base upstream 5'end of exon 4 (in intron 3) of PDE6B gene. CONCLUSION: There is a complex heterozygous mutation of PDE6B gene responsible for a sporadic RP patient in China. Several DNA variants were found in intron of PDE6B gene in the national population.

[Study on the hepatocytic cell targetability of liposomes].

AIM: To target for hepatocytic cell, liposomes was modified by special ligand. METHODS: Sterically stabilized liposomes (SSL) was conjugated with asialofeticin (AF), the ligand of asialoglycoprotein receptor (ASGP-R) of hepatocyte. ASGP-R-BLM is the ASGP-R reconstructed on bilayer lipid membrane (BLM). The recognition reaction between AF-SSL and ASGP-R-BLM can be monitored by the varieties of membrane electrical parameters. The targetability of AF-SSL mediated to hepatocyte was detected by radioisotopic labeled in vitro and in vivo. The therapeutic effect of antihepatocarcinoma was observed also. RESULTS: The lifetime of ASGP-R-BLM decreased with the added amount of AF-SSL. It was demonstrated that there was recognition reaction between AF-SSL and ASGP-R-BLM. The combination of AF-SSL with hepatocyte was significantly higher than that of SSL without AF-modified in vitro and in vivo. The survival time of rat for AF-SSL carriered ADM (adriamycin) group was much longer and the toxicities on heart, kidney and lung were lower than those SSL carried ADM group. CONCLUSION: It is possible to actively target the cell with specific receptor by ligand modified liposomes. The result prvide scientific basis of hepatocyte targeted liposomes.

[Influence of the mixed disinfectant of ClO2 and Cl2 on formation of chloroform].

The study on influence of mixed solution of ClO2 and Cl2 on formation of chloroform from 9 THMs precursors, such as fulvic acid (FA), resorcinol, phloroglucinol and cresorcinol etc. under conditions of different ClO2/Cl2 ratio, content of precursors, reaction pH, reaction time and reaction temperature etc. was studied. Results showed that as the mass percentage of ClO2 in the mixed disinfectant was increased, the amount of chloroform formed was reduced; such as when mass percentages of ClO2 were 25%, 50% and 75%, CHCl3 formed reduced 55%-65%, 70%-86% and 80%-93% respectively; until ClO2 was 90%, reduction of CHCl3 reached 95%-99%. In order to control the formation of chloroform thoroughly, mass percentage of ClO2 must be higher than 90%. This provided important scientific base for the necessity of using highly pure ClO2 in disinfection and developing generator which produced high quality ClO2.

[Inflammatory status in patients with end-stage renal disease: role of monocyte activation].

OBJECTIVE: To study the association of monocyte activation and the inflammatory status in patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD). METHODS: A total of 166 ESRD patients were recruited in the study, including 63 patients with pre-dialysis chronic renal failure (CRF), 16 undergoing continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) and 87 stable hemodialysis (HD) patients. Monocyte activation markers including plasma neopterin, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha, interleukin (IL)-1beta, and plasma levels of acute phase proteins (APP) such as C-reactive protein (CRP) and serum amyloid A (SAA) were monitored using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) kits. RESULTS: The levels of neopterin, TNF-alpha, IL-1beta, CRP and SAA significantly increased in ESRD patients as compared with the normal controls (P<0.05 ). CRP and SAA in HD patients were higher than those in non-dialysis patients (P<0.05). The levels of CRP was closely correlated with neopterin, TNF-alpha and IL-1beta(r=0.287, 0.314, 0.262, P<0.05, respectively), and SAA with neopterin (r=0.306, P<0.05). These correlations remained significant after the values were adjusted for creatinine clearance in non-dialysis patients. Plasma contents of TNF-alpha, IL-1beta, CRP and SAA were significantly elevated after a single hemodialysis session (P<0.05). CONCLUSION: Chronic inflammation occurs in patients with ESRD, which might be aggravated by hemodialysis. Activation of the monocytes might be involved in the pathogenesis of inflammation in uremia.
