[Liver metastasis in colorectal cancer and tumor angiogenesis].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the association between tumor angiogenetic activity and metastatic potential of colorectal cancer (CRC) retrospectively. METHODS: The microvessel density (MVD) and the level of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) expression were examined immunohistochemically from 61 specimens obtained by surgical resection of CRC. RESULTS: MVD was (27.0 +/- 8.4) and the expression of VEGF was (59.75 +/- 12.36)%. Both were significantly higher in the group of liver metastasis, and in the group of lymph node metastasis (P < 0.01, P < 0.05). Survival analysis indicated a significant difference between increasing MVD group and the control group (P < 0.01). CONCLUSIONS: VEGF-mediated angiogenesis plays an important role in liver metastasis of CRC, and MVD appears to be a new prognostic factor for the prediction of outcome in patients with CRC.

[Beaded molecule imprinted polymer for stereo isomer separation].

Beaded molecule imprinted polymer (MIP) was made by suspension polymerization. Particles with the size of 50-70 microns in diameter were collected and evaluated in HPLC mode to separate stereo isomers. Stereo isomers cinchonine and cinchonidine were successfully discriminated with selectivity factor of 2.89 and resolution factor of 0.76. Stereo selectivity of the MIP was found to come from both the interaction between the analyte and carboxyl group on the MIP and the similarity between the stereo structure of imprinted molecule and the MIP. The thermal analysis results showed that the MIP had high thermal stability with initial thermal decomposition temperature of 320 degrees C. The pore volume of the MIP was 0.1849 mL/g, the specific surface area was 126.84 sqm/g and the average pore diameter was 5.8 nanometer. Scanning electron microscopy showed that MIP had perfect spherical morphology.

[Studies on the parasites of Paris polyphylla var. yunnanensis].

Two bacteria and three fungi were isolated from the hypogeal stems of Paris polyphylla var. yunnanensis. The bacteria were identified as Bacillus cereus and Pseudomonas alcaligenes, and the fungi were identified as Periconia sp., Pachnocybe albida and Hormomyces paridiphilus. The results on liquid culture of B. cereus, P. alcaligenes and H. paridiphilus indicated that the colloidization and polysaccharide content increasing in hypogeal stems of P. polyphylla var. yunnanensis were due to the extracellular polysaccharide secretion of the parasitical fungus H. paridiphilus.

[Study on the correlation between the cyclin D1 and laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma].

OBJECTIVE: To study the correlation between the expression level of Cyclin D1 and the laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma (LSCC). METHOD: 35 LSCC cases testified pathologically were included in the study. The samples obtained from each tumor tissue and adjacent normal mucosa were detected to see the expression level of Cyclin D1 with the method of RT-PCR and light density half quantive analysis. RESULT: The expression level of Cyclin D1 was significant higher in almost all turmor tissues than in the adjacent normal mucosae (P < 0.05). Overexpressed carcinomas were more frequently associated with lymph node metastases (P < 0.05). A significant association between the expression level of Cyclin D1 and TNM was found. The higher T stage, the higher the expression level of Cyclin D1 (P < 0.01). The expression level of low histological grade carcinomas was lower than that of the high histological grade carcinomas, but the difference had no statistical significance. No association between overexpression of Cyclin D1 and sex, age was found too. CONCLUSION: The result indicates that the expression level of Cyclin D1 in LSCC may be a useful marker of prognostic significance and it provide a molecular biology basis for treating the LSCC patients.
