How long can a gastric erosion persist?

In the long-term course of idiopathic erosions, some of the many erosions in a stomach may persist for a surprisingly long time, changing in appearance, while others heal and recur through years and decades. Roentgenologically, this could be shown over 5-15 years; the lesion was still present at the end of the follow-up, and in some cases its connection with erosions was no longer obvious.

Duodenal erosions.

Duodenal erosions may be classified as (1) Idiopathic erosions, a disease entity with a tendency to recur throughout a period of decades, and (2) Erosions as a stress reaction to various disorders. Massive bleeding may occur in both forms. It is of clinical interest that bleeding in a patient with duodenal erosions may not be from the duodenum but from concomitant stress haemorrhages in the upper part of the stomach. The natural history of duodenal erosions is reviewed, and 10 cases are analysed.

Liver size in children determined with quantitative methods.

Although five quantitative ultrasonic methods for assessment of liver size in children have been published, there is no account in the literature of experience over the full range of clinical material. This experience, however, is available from our material of 300 cases examined by a roentgenological method, giving a notion of the results to be obtained with a quantitative method in children.

Liver size in hepatobiliary disease and in jejuno-ileal bypass.

The size of the liver, as a clinical sign, is more informative when determined with a quantitative method than when evaluated with the clinical methods available to date. With a quantitative roentgenologic method for calculation of the liver volume, the size of the organ is analyzed in hepatobiliary disease and in obesity treated wih jejuno-ileal bypass.

Adult↗

Quantitative method to determine the liver size.

The need for quantitative methods to determine the liver size has not been generally recognized at the clinic. Subjective evaluation of the size of the organ in roentgenograms is unsatisfactory, which is seen when subjective records are compared with the liver volume calculated by quantitative roentgenologic method.

Long-term prognosis of idiopathic gastric erosions.

The long-term prognosis of multiple gastric erosions (erosive gastritis) is analyzed in 58 cases observed over 10-17 years, showing the disease to recur through decades. Idiopathic erosions occur mainly in the antrum and can be visualized roentgenologically, whereas "stress" erosions are in the body of the stomach and may only be diagnosed endoscopically.

Polyps caused by gastric erosions.

Gastric erosions, a disease with a tendency to recur through decades, may in advanced age and anacidity give rise to polyps. These histologically benign polyps may be recognized by clinical methods of examination.
