Digital subtraction angiography in the evaluation of chemodectomas.

During the last 2 years eleven patients with surgically confirmed chemodectomas have been investigated by means of digital subtraction angiography (DSA). Seven patients underwent i.v. DSA, which revealed eight carotid body tumours, and in the remaining four with jugulotympanic chemodectomas intra-arterial (i.a.) DSA was performed. We found i.V. DSA an easy and satisfactory method for the investigation of carotid body tumours but when glomus intravagale, tympanicum or jugulare is suspected an i.a. selective injection is required.

Magnetic resonance imaging of marrow heterotopia in haemoglobinopathy.

The MRI findings of masses of MH in three patients suffering from thalassaemia major, sickle-cell anaemia and thalassaemia intermedia, respectively, are presented. There was good correlation between the MRI findings and the conventional radiology or CT appearance of the masses. The masses produced a low intensity signal, similar to that of the adjacent marrow of the thoracic spine, while they were surrounded by a high-intensity signal rim attributed to a layer of fat surrounding the masses. The latter MRI finding is thought to be characteristic of MH masses.

Comparative study between iohexol and iopromide for aortofemoral arteriography.

A double-blind clinical trial was performed on 50 patients in order to compare omnipague (iohexol) and Ultravist-300 (iopromide) for peripheral arteriography. Both contrast media were well tolerated, but there was less body heat and pain in the Ultravist group. There were no idiosyncratic reactions or significant changes in blood pressure before and after the injection.

Computed tomography in the evaluation of spinal aneurysmal bone cyst.

Computed tomographic findings in three cases of aneurysmal bone cyst (ABC) are reported. Although conventional radiography is usually adequate in the demonstration of an expansile osteolytic cavity, CT may provide additional information about tumour characteristics, localization and extent, show the lesion's relation to the spinal cord and thus be of great help in preoperative planning.

Spontaneous aorto-cisterna chyli anastomosis.

A case of a spontaneous aorto-cisterna chyli communication is presented in a 65 year old patient who was admitted to the Hospital with severe abdominal pain simulating a dissecting aneurysm of the aorta. The diagnosis was suspected on a CT examination and established by a free flow aortogram and selective catheterization of the cisterna chyli through the aorta.

Tuberculosis of the spine. CT demonstration of paravertebral abscess.

Two surgically proven cases of tuberculous psoas abscess are presented. The common findings on CT were low-density paraspinal masses and extension of the lesions which followed the typical distribution of iliopsoas muscle in both cases. The skeletal findings from the spine are also discussed. Our cases indicate the complementary use of plain radiography and CT in the investigation of tuberculous spondylitis.

Detection of pericardial heart disease by computed tomography.

The findings on computed tomography (CT) in 10 cases of pericardial disease, nine of which were surgically confirmed, are presented. The 10th patient (Case 10), whose CT diagnosis was 'pericarditis', was found to have a myxosarcoma at surgery. In some of these cases, echocardiographic and conventional radiographic investigation gave inconclusive information regarding the underlying pathology. Our results support the conclusion that CT complements echocardiography: in the quantitative and qualitative assessment of pericardial effusions, in the localisation of space-occupying lesions involving the pericardium and in diagnosis of constrictive pericarditis. As echocardiography is so very much operator-dependent, CT may well be a more reliable method of obtaining a result which indicates both the diagnosis and the extent of the disease.

The diagnostic importance of the recognition of the inferior vena cava abnormalities on CT-examinations.

Two unusual variations of the Vena cava inferior, as shown by CT examinations, are reported and characteristic X-rays, as well as CT scans, are presented. The first case shows an IVC course to the left of the aorta and the second case absence of the intrahepatic portion of the IVC with azygos continuation. Difficulties in the differential diagnosis are analyzed and discussed, both demonstrated by plain X-rays and CT scans.

A comparative study of the degree of arterial recanalization in kidneys of dogs following transcatheter embolization with eight different materials.

41 dogs were subjected to percutaneous arterial embolization of branches or the main trunk of the renal artery with or without prior injury to the kidney. 8 materials were used: homologous blood clot, muscle, fat, fascia, barium sulfate, plain catgut, gelfoam and polyvinyl alcohol (Ivalon). From the angiographic investigation over a relatively long period, it was observed that complete recanalization of the embolized vessels occurred only with blood clot and gelfoam; partial recanalization, with muscle fat and plain catgut; and no recanalization at all with fat, barium sulfate and Ivalon.

Percutaneous arterial embolization in the kidneys of dogs: a comparative study of eight different materials.

Forty-one dogs were subjected to percutaneous arterial embolization of branches of the renal artery or its main trunk with or without prior injury to the kidney, with eight different materials, i.e., homologous blood clot, muscle, fat, fascia, barium sulphate, plain catgut, gelfoam and polyvinyl alcohol (Ivalon). From the immediate observations made, as well as the haemodynamic, angiographic and histological studies over a period ranging from 24 h to several weeks, it was concluded that Ivalon was the best material for arterial embolization.
