Synthesis and anti-aggregatory activity of linear retro-inverso RGD peptides.

Six retro-inverso tri- and tetrapeptide analogues of RGD were prepared and their anti-aggregatory activity was determined by platelet aggregation tests in comparison with the corresponding parent peptides. An efficient method for the introduction of a malonyl-aspartic residue into a peptide chain is described for the first time. A 2-3-fold decrease in potency or total loss of bioactivity was observed with the new peptides; structure-activity relationships are discussed.

Gingival recessions and noncarious cervical lesions: a soft and hard tissue challenge.

Gingival recessions and noncarious cervical lesions are frequent and closely related defects which can be successfully treated by mucogingival surgery and restorative therapy techniques either used alone or in combination depending on the defect characteristics. Proper treatment planning is guided by careful clinical diagnosis. A selection of treatment modalities are presented and useful hints proposed: the long term success is always strictly bound to the identification and elimination of the etiologic factors, to a correct treatment and a meticulous maintenance program.

Indirect composite restorations in the anterior region: a predictable technique for complex cases.

The indirect composite inlay technique demonstrates excellent aesthetic results in the posterior regions, achieved by reproducing the shape, color, and contour of the natural tooth on a cast model rather than using the free-hand composite restorative modality. The utilization of the indirect technique can be adapted for the anterior regions as well, and it offers a valid treatment alternative that is predictable with optimal restorative results. The evaluation, planning, and accuracy of implementation of the various phases of this methodology allow a more precise achievement of the result; any potential error in the restoration can be corrected prior to final cementation. This technique increases the quality of composite restorations that have always been considered unpredictable and extensively dependent upon the skills of the operator. The learning objective of this article is to familiarize the reader with the clinical and laboratory phases of this indirect treatment modality of the anterior dentition.

Light and color in anterior composite restorations.

As defined by physics, color is light. With this premise, this article highlights the importance of the interaction between light and the hard tissues of the tooth as compared to the interaction between light and composite restorative materials. Based on the philosophy of color interpretation and its subsequent practical application in the development of a fluorescent and opalescent microhybrid composite system, the protocol outlined allows the clinician to achieve restorations with a light/composite interaction that closely resembles that of light/natural dentition. The learning objective of this article is to present specific diagnostic techniques to establish predictable identification and reproduction of the natural anatomy and nuance color characteristics exhibited by natural dentition with composite resin. A detailed evaluation of hue, chroma, opalescence, and fluorescence are presented in order to simplify the composite stratification technique.

Determination and communication of color using the five color dimensions of teeth.

The determination and communication of color in dentistry is based on dated concepts that cause difficulty for clinicians and technicians who use their personal experiences to interpret this parameter, which is so important in aesthetic care. In this article, the author proposes a concept of color that has evolved from the observation and study of extracted and in vivo natural dentition. This research has been performed with the aim of providing the clinician with a predictable method of determining color from clinical evidence.
