Primary malignant tumours associated with thyroid carcinoma in autopsy material.

In our Department 37,504 autopsies were performed in the last 30 years. Double multiple primary malignant tumours were found in 385 cases (4.2% of the cases with malignant tumours). In thyroid cancer cases, tumours of other organs were more frequent (20 cases, 22.7%), and these tumour associations were observed mainly simultaneously; there were no significant sex differences. In the more frequent synchronous cases, the thyroid cancer was a tumour only accessory to other malignancies; in the rarer metachronous cases, the thyroid cancer was secondary to postoperative irradiation of the first tumour (4 of 5 cases). Thyroid cancers were seen most frequently together with lung, breast and digestive system tumours; there was no special association recognizable to certain other malignancies. Follicular carcinoma was more frequent among the cancers associated with another tumour (12 of 20 cases), while in general the papillary was the most frequent type (48 of 88 cases).

Aged

[Primary malignant pericardial mesothelioma].

The case-history of a 41-year-old man is reported. He was admitted because of the sudden development of left hemiparesis, loss of consciousness and increasingly deeper coma. The ECG demonstrated second-degree AV block with Wenkebach conduction or episodes with complete AV block. The colour Doppler ultrasound and cranial CT examination revealed occlusion of the right internal carotid artery and a cerebral infarct of the right hemisphere. Within 24 hours patient died from herniation of the brainstem. Postmortem examination revealed a pericardial neoplasm infiltrating both left and right atrium, AV junctional area, interventricular septum and right ventricle. The tumor tissue grew transmurally and protruded into the cavities of the heart. The right internal carotid artery was occluded by a tumor embolism. The histochemical and immunohistochemical results proved that the tumor was a primary malignant pericardial mesothelioma. This kind of cardiac tumor involving the AV node and mimicking stroke is very rare.

Adult

[Multiple primary malignant tumors involving the liver].

In the autopsy material of the Department of Pathology of Albert Szent-Györgyi Medical University 167 primary liver cancers were observed in 30 years, from which 13 patients (7.8%) had also other primary malignancies. The tumour-associations were mainly synchronously, there was strong male predominance. In 9 cases the hepatocellular carcinoma originated in cirrhotic liver. The most frequent extrahepatic tumours were found in the lungs (5 cases), smoking was among the anamnestic data.

Aged

[Prostatic cancer metastasized into the kidney and kidney cancer metastasized into the lung].

In a 81-years old man synchronous triple cancers (prostate, kidney and lung) were found at autopsy. The poorly differentiated prostatic adenocarcinoma metastasized to the clear cell carcinoma of the right kidney and to its solitary lung metastasis. The "neoplasm to neoplasm" metastasis and the "metastasis in metastasis" was confirmed by immunohistochemistry.

Adenocarcinoma

[Cancer metastasis causing superior vena cava syndrome in the right heart].

In a 60-years-old woman, 1,5 year later of the diagnosis of the inoperable endocervical carcinoma vena cava superior syndrome developed. At autopsy mainly intracavital metastatic tumour mass was found in the right atrium of the heart. To the authors knowledge, intracavital heart metastatic tumor as cause of vena cava superior syndrome has not been described previously.

Carcinoma

[Malignant tumors associated with thyroid cancer in an autopsy material].

In the Department of Pathology of Albert Szent-Györgyi Medical University at Szeged in Hungary 37,504 autopsies were performed in the last 30 years and double multiple primary malignant tumours were found in 385 cases (4.2%). In thyroid cancer cases the tumours of other organs were more frequent (22.7%), and these tumour-associations were observed mainly simultaneously, there were no important sex differences. In the most of cases the thyroid cancer was only a side diagnosis beside other malignancies, in the more rare metachronous cases the thyroid cancer was secondary following postoperative irradiation of the first tumour (4 cases of 5). We have seen thyroid cancers most frequently together with lung, breast and digestive system tumours.

Aged

Adenomatoid tumor of the uterus. Report of ten cases.

Adenomatoid tumors were detected as causal findings in ten uteri removed surgically for other reasons. This tumor can cause diagnostic problems in histopathological examinations. It is considered to be probably of mesothelial origin. Two forms are distinguished, in one of which smooth muscle cells participate in the growth.

Adult

[Stomach cancer metastasizing into a solitary adenomatous colonic polyp].

A 69-year-old man with known diffuse type gastric stump carcinoma was found at autopsy to have widely disseminated metastasis of this cancer. Metastasis also occurred in the adenomatous polyp of the cecum. This is the third report, to our knowledge, in the literature and the first Hungarian publication of a metastasis to an adenomatous polyp of the colon.

Adenocarcinoma

[Adenomatoid tumor of the uterus: report of 3 cases].

Adenomatoide tumor of uterine is reported on the basis of study of three surgical preparations. Tumors were detected as causal finding in uterines removed for other changes. The tumor can be a histopathologic diagnostic problem. It is likely considered to be of mesothelial origin. Its two forms are separated; in one also smooth muscle cells take part in growth.

Adenoma

[Metastasis of a stomach carcinoma in a solitary adenomatous cecal polyp].

Gastric stump carcinoma with widely disseminated metastases and solitary coecal adenoma were recorded by postmortem investigation of a man who had died at the age of 69. The gastric carcinoma had spread metastases into the adenoma. This is the fourth case carcase of metastasis to a colonic polyp so far described in the literature.
