Mice were chronically treated with either atropine, methysergide or pentobarbital in order to induce sensitivity changes resulting from adaptative adjustments in the central nervous system (CNS), and to examine the degree of tolerance to and physical dependence on morphine several days after the discontinuation of pretreatments. Subsequently to the chronic blockade of muscarinic or serotonergic receptors, the intensity of tolerance was unaffected, but some manifestations of the abstinence behavior induced by naloxone were reduced in part. This attenuation of the abstinence syndrome in the pretreated mice was reverted by an additional dose of either atropine or methysergide administered a few min before naloxone. Additional experiments with physostigmine or 5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP) in morphine-dependent mice yielded results compatible with the hypothesis that morphine physical dependence may be the manifestation of compensatory changes of sensitivity to serotonin and acetylcholine in the CNS. These results do not exclude the participation of other neurotransmitters or neurohormones in morphine dependence.
The inflammatory linear verrucous nevus is a recently described variety of epidermal nevus clinically and histologically characterized by an inflammatory component. The lesion stars at birth or at early age, pruritus is constant. Histologically the picture is psoriasiform. The therapeutic response is poor. Seven cases are presented. Associated extracutaneous alterations were presented in four of them.
A Mexican child was born white and progressively became black. At the age of 21 months, the whole integument was deep black in the absence of other alterations. Electron microscopy showed a Negroid pattern in the epidermal melanosomes. Among the different forms of progressive mucocutaneous pigmentations previously described in the literature, we were unable to find a similar case.

A 2-year-old Mexican girl had hypochromic lesions characteristic of incontinentia pigmenti achromians on the right half of the body. Extra cutaneous alterations were: dacryostenosis, bilateral genu valgus, ataxic gait, language retardation, hydrocephaly and abnormal electroencephalogram. Electron microscopy showed numerous Langerhans cells in the epidermis.
An 11-year-old boy with typical lesions of pachyonychia congenita (Jadassohn-Lewandowsky) type II and with keratotic lesions histologically characteristic of Kyrle's Disease is described.
Several drugs affecting nerve cell excitability, by opposing ion movements in membranes, were tested in mice rendered tolerant to or dependent on morphine. The purpose of the study was to investigate whether these drugs share the ability to attenuate morphine tolerance and dependence exhibited by tricyclic antidepressants. Tolerance to morphine was decreased by the administration of imipramine, doxepin, promethazine, propranolol, lidocaine and quinidine. Chlorpromazine and carbamazepine were ineffective. The intensity of the abstinence syndrome provoked by naloxone was decreased by chlorpromazine, imipramine, doxepin, lidocaine, quinidine and propranolol. Diphenyl. hydantion and carbamazepine had no effect. The results are discussed in relation with the blockade of ion conductance and their interference with the release of neurotransmitters produced by the drugs assayed.
According to the authors the best designation of Ritter's disease would be "staphilococcic epidermal exfoliation" SEE. The physiopathological and agnoslogical basis for this denomination could be the following: 1st The "S. aureus" is the ehtiological agent of the SSE in man. The Koch postulates necessary to confirm this hypothesis have been accomplished. 2nd "Staphylococcus aureus" produces a thermostable toxin that is active indepently of the staphilococcus and gives rise to the separation of the cells of the stratum granulosus of the epidermis and eventually exfoliation in suckling babies and in the newborn mouse. 3rd The "Staphylococcus aureus" may be present on the skin or in other localisations such as the bowel or pharinx. 4th The viable "S. aureus" when administered subcutaneously to the adult mice gives rise to lesions clinically and histologically similar to the impetigo observed in children. 5th The "S. aureus" killed by means of autoclave (that is, the staphylococcic toxine by itself does not give rise to any lesion when administered to the healthy adult mouse). Neijther has the SEE been observed in healthy adult man. The authors reach the conclusion that the SSE and the toxic epidermal necrolysis are basically different according to the histopathology therapeutic response and prognosis and they must be considered as independant entities.
Rud's syndrome is a neuroichthyosis with hypogonadism, associated with mental deficiency and epilepsy. Short stature is a frequent component of the syndrome. The primary genetic defect and the pattern of inheritance have not yet been determined. A typical patient is presented, with mental deficiency, short stature, pypoacusia, muscular atrophy, tylosis, pseudoacanthosis nigricans and endocrine disturbances. The neuroichthyosis with hypogonadism must be considered Rud's syndrome. A classification of neuroichthyosis is proposed. In a first group is neuroichthyosis with hypogonadism, in the second group is neuroichthyosis with spasticity and in the third group, neuroichthyosis without hypogonadism or spasticity.
The case is presented of a 3-year-old girl with urticaria and pressure dermographism. The condition began the age of one year. A skin biopsy confirmed the suspected diagnosis of diffuse mastocytosis. The identification of the form of mastocytosis without skin lesions and with dermographism and pressure urticaria as its only signs is important. It should be considered in any chronic urticaria appearing at birth or in an early age which is unresponsive to the usual symptomatic medication.
Mice were given several atropine injections at a high dosage level. After 2 to 5 days of cessation of treatment the effects of morphine, arecoline, amphetamine, pentylenetetrazol, reserpine, and hexobarbital were determined and compared with those found in saline injected controls. The influence of atropine treatment on tolerance development to morphine was also studied. After withdrawal of atropine a reduction of the analgesic responses to morphine and arecoline was observed. A decrease in hexobarbital sleeping time was also found. There was no significant influence on the analgesic effect of amphetamine, on the depressant action of reserpine, and on the convulsant effect of pentylenetetrazol. The influence of the administration and further withdrawal of atropine on tolerance development to morphine was masked by the concomitant reduction of morphine analgesia. It was impossible to observe a supersensitivity to the pharmacological agents studied.
