Plasmid-containing strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa were screened for resistance to disinfectants. Two plasmids, pMG1 and pMG2, were found to determine hexachlorophene resistance.

Swimming as a response of the sea anemone Actinostola new species can be elicited as a result of contact with the submarginal surface of another swimming sea anemone Stomphia coccinea. However, Stomphia does not swim as a result of contact with Actinostola. In all other known respects, swimming is caused in both species by the same stimuli, including certain starfishes, a nudibranch, and electrical stimuli. No agent that causes Actinostola to swim has been detected in extracts, rubbings, or dried matter from Stomphia.
Osteochondroma of the proximal fibula is relatively common, but reports of this lesion in conjunction with peroneal nerve palsy have been scarce. Six patients with peroneal nerve palsy and fibular exostosis are presented with the results of electrical studies, radiographic evaluation, physical examination, and operative treatment. A wide variation in presentation and outcome was observed. Preoperative and postoperative electromyography and nerve-conduction studies are useful in evaluation. A heightened awareness of this entity is required to avoid permanent damage in an otherwise treatable condition.
Several types of central nervous system tumors primarily consisting of a combination of astrocytes and fibrocollagen and occurring most commonly in infancy have been separately introduced as new diagnostic entities. The names applied to these tumors have included 'gliofibroma', 'desmoplastic cerebral astrocytoma', and 'desmoplastic infantile ganglioglioma', a group containing ganglion cells as well as the astrocytes and mesenchymal tissue. We studied a gliofibroma arising in the fourth ventricle of a 6-month-old infant and three examples of desmoplastic cerebral astrocytoma in infants utilizing routine histological and immunocytochemical methods, and at the ultrastructural level in two tumors. In view that the desmoplastic cerebral astrocytomas contain poorly differentiated neuroepithelial cells and rarely, a ganglion cell, we suggest that gliofibroma and desmoplastic astrocytoma are basically the same entity and that the desmoplastic infantile ganglioglioma is a variant containing primitive or mature ganglion cells.
This is the second article in our series which looks in detail at one of the most pressing nursing problems of the age--coping with the behaviours of people with dementia in acute care units. The authors analyse the misunderstandings and misperceptions which conspire to build barriers to communication between nurses and people with dementia, and offer some practical advice on how to overcome them.
