Non-specific tumoral markers in hepatocellular carcinoma.

The number of biological tumoral markers used in the diagnosis and therapy monitoring of hepatocellular carcinoma has increased, but their separate use is limited as none of them is specific, being only tumour-associated (proteins). But when in abnormal amounts and used in combination, they are of great help in the diagnosis and therapy monitoring. A combination of alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) and alpha 1-antitrypsin (AAT) data raises the diagnostic accuracy in hepatocellular carcinoma from 43% obtained with AFP alone, to 90.5% and if the combination includes the carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) data too the accuracy increases to 100%, still without strict specificity for hepatocellular carcinoma.

Effect of cyclophosphamide in active nonviral cirrhosis.

The immunologic effects of cyclophosphamide were studied in 16 patients with active nonviral liver cirrhosis with a view to improving the pathogenetic treatment of these diseases. After months of cyclophosphamide administration first in doses of 100 mg/day (for 14 days) then in doses of 200 mg per week, the hypergammaglobulinemia present at entry was reduced significantly from 2.55 +/- 0.35 g/dl to 1.71 +/- 0.17 g/dl concomitantly with the proportional increase of the active suppressor T lymphocytes, from 29.3 +/- 3.59% to 38.0 +/- 2.1%. The use of smaller doses of cyclophosphamide, i.e., 200 mg/week, allowed the maintenance of its immunosuppressive properties and prevented its side effects.

Immunostimulating effect of an oxygen-free radical scavenger on E-rosette forming cells.

The influence of an oxygen-free radical scavenger, Epurox (containing superoxide dismutase, catalase and mannitol) on E-rosette forming cells (E-RFC) obtained from 40 healthy subjects, was studied using a standard method. The preincubation of lymphocytes with Epurox increased the E-rosette forming in 80% of the subjects. The mean E-rosette count after preincubation with Epurox (64.17 +/- 6.95) was greater (p less than 0.01) as compared with that obtained without scavenger addition. The stimulating effect of Epurox may be due to the inhibition of cAMP synthesis. This assumption is supported by our study regarding the antagonistic effect of Epurox on E-rosette inhibition induced by histamine, a powerful stimulator of adenylate cyclase.

Applicability of the leukocyte migration inhibition test in the clinical practice.

The leukocyte migration inhibition test reveals in vitro the presence of lymphocyte sensitivity and, consequently, of cell-mediated immunity, to a given antigen. Applied in a variety of immune and allergic cases it proved to be useful for the positive diagnosis of the disease and/or for the detection of cell-mediated immune deficiency. The results obtained recommend the leukocyte migration inhibition test in the clinical practice.

[Alpha 1-antitrypsin, alpha 2-macroglobulin and reactive protein C in gastric cancer].

Proteins of acute phase: alpha 1-antitrypsin (AAT), alpha 2-macroglobulin (AMG), reactive C protein (RCP) were determined in the serum of 50 patients with gastric cancer. The Mancini, simple radial immunodiffusion method was used (SRID). The concentration of these proteins increased at 32/50 (64%) for AAT; 30/50 (60%) for AMG and 33/50 (66%) for RCP. By cumulative evaluation, the positivity of serum markers increased to 88%. The importance of differential diagnosis with regard to the benign gastric lesions (adenoma, ulcer, segmentary fibrosis, before receiving the bioptic result, is emphasized.
