[The immunoprotein profile of calves raised under extremely healthy conditions].

The immuno-protein profile of calves was studied. On the basis of the results obtained under extreme health conditions, attention is drawn to the incidence of subnormal values of total immunoglobulins in 74%, and hypoproteinaemia in 24%, of the calves in the first week after birth. Failure to respect the principles of colostral nutrition is also indicated by the finding of a marked immunodeficient state in 49% of the calves during the first three days of their life; 19% of the calves showed threshold values of total immunoglobulins. During the first 72 hours of life, a physiological concentration of total immunoglobulins was recorded only in 30% of the studied calves. In this group, hypoproteinaemia was recorded only in calves whose total immunoglobulin concentration was 2.66 +/- 1.45 U ZST, on the average. Within the studied age categories of calves, the lowest simultaneous levels of immunoglobulins and total protein were recorded in the third and fourth week of life. It was even in the seventh to eighth week post partum that up to 31% of the calves showed subnormal values of total immunoglobulins. Immunopoiesis as such depended on the level of colostral immunity.

[Immunoglobulin dynamics in calves in a commercial rearing system].

The levels of immunoglobulins were studied in the colostrum of dairy cows and in the blood serum of calves after birth. The study also included tests concerning the effect of colostrum intake, age and season on immunoglobulin levels. In the colostrum of cows, the highest levels were as follows: IgG 69.4 +/- 27.5 g per litre; IgM 7.83 +/- 1.92 g per litre. In the first milking (12 hours from parturition) their content decreased to half the starting values. Threshold values of immunoglobulins were found in the blood serum of calves before the administration of colostrum. After optimum colostral nutrition the levels of immunoglobulins increased rapidly, the highest values being obtained 24 hours from birth (total immunoglobulin 23,3 +/- 4.1 U ZST: IgG 17.6 +/- 3.1 g per 1; IgM 1.8 +/- 0.5 g per 1). The immunoglobulin levels are significantly influenced by the age of the calves. From the starting values, the levels decrease to the minimum in the fourth to fifth week, followed by a marked rise. In the calves with low immunoglobulin levels the increase was already observed after the first week, and in the calves with high initial values only after the fifth week of age. A marked seasonal dynamics of immunoglobulins in the blood serum of calves was demonstrated. The lowest levels were recorded in February to April, the highest in May to October.

[Year-round buffering of cattle feed mixture and its effect on metabolism and productivity].

Commercial feed mixture was buffered with a 2% and 3% admixture of bentonite buffer in two beef cattle herds in the course of one year. The mixtures were fed on a continuous basis. The two-per-cent buffer concentration was tested in 110 test animals with 104 control animals and the three-per-cent concentration in 50 test animals with 50 controls. Throughout the trial the over-all health condition remained unchanged, the hematocrit and hemoglobin values were balanced in both groups. The biochemical indices were better in the test groups: hypocalcemia improved (in the controls it grew worse), magnesiemia was slightly increased, the inorganic serum factor did not go beyond physiological limits, and acidosis did not occur (as distinct from the control animals). The levels of transaminases (GOT, GPT), glutamic acid dehydrogenase, total serum protein, alkaline phosphatase as well as ammonia and urea in blood serum were at physiological values with po-differences within groups. In the case of the three-per-cent buffer concentration the daily gains were higher by 0.073 kg, and in the two-per-cent concentration by 0.058 kg, in the test animals. The average annual gain was higher by 25.5 kg, and by 18.3 kg, respectively. With respect to the price of buffer and to the efficiency of the animals tested, the economic indices of feed mixture buffering are highly effective.
