The Minnesota Couples Communication Program and clinical pastoral education.

Describes the use of The Minnesota Couples Communication Program (MCCP) as part of a Clinical Pastoral Education unit's efforts to assist CPE students grow in communication skills, Notes four styles of communication and five modes of awareness and how these may lead to the establishment of more adequate communication and shared meaning. Observes that workshops using the MCCP may help pastors to initiate and improve their pastoral activities.

[Cadmium content of whole blood of inhabitants from various regions of Bavaria].

The blood Cd-concentration of 670 inhabitants of cities and rural districts (386 children, 175 men and 109 women) was measured by electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry. The cadmium levels ranged from 0.3 micrograms Cd/1 to 7.3 micrograms Cd/1 blood with a median value of 0.9 micrograms Cd/1. Splitting up the whole collective according to the different living areas, the inhabitants of München, Neustadt and Nürnberg suburbs showed medians between 0.8 and 0.9 micrograms Cd/l blood. Higher medians (1.4 and 1.2 micrograms/l blood) have been calculated for the people living in Weiden and Nürnberg central area. The measured levels and medians correspond with the results of the newer national and international literature. There is no correlation of cadmium levels in blood and age or sex. The median for non smoking women and for children comes to 0.9 and for non smoking men to 0.8 micrograms Cd/l blood. The cadmium concentrations in blood are significantly higher in smokers than in nonsmokers. The group of nonsmokers shows a median of 0.9 micrograms Cd/l, for smokers consuming 20 cigarettes or less a day there is a median of 1.7 micrograms Cd/l while the group smoking more than 20 cigarettes a day has a median value of 2.50 micrograms Cd/l. Except one value all levels higher than 2.50 micrograms Cd/l belong to the group of smokers. The feasibility of blood cadmium analysis for biological screening of population with regard to environmental exposure is discussed.

Cystic fibrosis. II. The urinary mucociliary inhibitor.

In the current study, the cystic fibrosis cationic mucociliary inhibitor has been purified from urine by ion exchange chromatography, gel filtration, lectin affinity chromatography, isoelectric focusing, and high performance liquid chromatography. The molecular size of the cationic mucociliary inhibitor was estimated to be in the range of 4,000 to 13,500 MW, by its elution on Sephadex G-50, and between 7,500 and 2,750 MW, by urea-sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. In addition to the cationic mucociliary inhibitor, an anionic mucociliary inhibitor was also detected in the urinary fraction isoelectrically focused between pH 4.5 and 4.9. The identity of the mucociliary inhibitor as a glycoprotein was established in the current study by affinity chromatography on Phaseolus lunatus lectin, by radiolabeling the carbohydrate with galactose oxidase and tritiated sodium borohydride, and by determining the presence of a large concentration of glucosamine and small amounts of galactosamine by amino acid analysis. The amino acid analysis of the purified major component of the cationic mucociliary inhibitor reveals that the glucosamine concentrations represents a high percentage of the composition of the glycoprotein.

[The risks of photochemotherapy (author's transl)].

The side effect of phototherapy with 8-methoxypsoralen was divided in short- and longterm damage. From 1969 till 1980 2 013 patients were treated. The pattern of alteration by PUVA depends on doses, continuance of therapy and type of dermatoses as psoriasis, vitiligo, mycosis fungoides, physical urticarias, chronic eczemas. The spontaneous development of tumors, the initiating or promotion of tumors by PUVA as well as a regression of tumors by PUVA has to be taken into account regarding the absolute numbers of tumors after PUVA-therapy. The risk of the PUVA-therapy depends on the doses of continuance of the treatment including the combination with other sources of radiations or natural sun-exposition. The possibilities of drug combinations to lower the total doses of light energy are discussed according the recommendation of several teams in Germany.

[Idiopathic familial right atrial dilatation].

In a 53-year-old woman with cardiomegaly and atrial fibrillation, cineangiography revealed idiopathic enlargement of the right atrium and mitral valve prolapse. Two-dimensional echocardiography was carried out in the entire family, which lives in the northeastern part of Switzerland. In 2 of the 4 siblings of the proposita, idiopathic enlargement of the right atrium, mitral valve prolapse and supraventricular rhythm disturbances were found. In one child of the patient with the largest right atrium, idiopathic enlargement of the right atrium associated with mitral valve prolapse was also present. To our knowledge this is the first report on familial occurrence of idiopathic enlargement of the right atrium accompanied by mitral valve prolapse.

Fine structural localisation of acetylcholinesterase activity in the compound eye of the honeybee (Apis mellifica L.).

Acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity was demonstrated histochemically at the electron microscopic level in the compound eye of the worker bee (Apis mellifica L.) by use of the method of Lewis and Shute (1969). All photoreceptor axons (short and long visual fibres) display AChE activity. The reaction product is located in the axoplasm and at the plasma membrane. Substantial amounts of the reaction product can be detected in the intercellular spaces between the visual fibres. Along the visual fibres, the enzyme activity is unevenly distributed. High AChE activity is present in the distal parts of te axons, in contrast to lower enzyme levels in the lamina. However, AChE is also present in the proximal terminals of the visual fibres as well as in the intercellular spaces between visual fibre terminals and the postsynaptic neurones (monopolar cells). Intracellular enzyme activity is almost absent in the monopolars. The authors assume the high AChE activity in the visual fibres to be indicative of acetylcholine as the transmitter at the first synapse of the compound eye. This hypothesis is discussed in view of the results of autoradiographic, electrophysiological and pharmacological investigations of the compound eye and of hte ocellus. Our data are a variance with results of studies on the eyes of Diptera.

Novel urinary fragments from human basement membrane collagen.

Five fragments of collagen have been purified from human urine. The fragments cross-reacted with basement membrane collagen from pig kidney cortices when tested against antiserum to basement membrane collagen, type IV, from murine tumor. The concentrations of these fragments were sufficient for amino acid analysis, immunological analysis, and in one case, preliminary analytical amino acid sequencing. Compositional analysis of the fragments indicated concentrations of hydroxylysine, hydroxyproline, and glycine that are typical of collagen. High values of hexosamines and neutral sugars were also found. An NH2-terminal sequence of 18 residues was obtained for one fragment of Mr approximately 6,500. This sequence was unique among proteins reported to date, but was obviously collagen-like. A urinary source of basement membrane collagen fragments will permit molecular characterization of basement membrane in inherited or acquired diseases affecting this structure.

The frequency of ovular resorption during the first trimester of twin pregnancy.

A follow-up of 78 twin pregnancies diagnosed in the first trimester indicated that early ovular resorption occurred in 63% of spontaneous and 64% of Clomiphene-induced gestations, so that singletons were born. No failure was observed in the 12 twin conceptions following administration of gonadotropins or Cyclofenil.
