The effect of N-(3, 5, 5-trimethyl-2-pyrazolino-1-carbonimidoyl)-guanidine hydrochloride (BPC-151) on lipid metabolism of rats and pigs.

The effect of BPC-151 on the lipid level in the rat and pig blood serum and on the lipid content in the homogenate of rat liver, on pyruvate and lactate in the blood serum of pigs, and on aggregation of blood platelets in pigs was investigated. Hyperlipidemia was induced by administration for 6 months a high lipid diet containing coconut oil, cholesterol and cholic acid. The hypolipemic action of BPC-151, particularly against the increase in free fatty acids, was demonstrated. The investigated compound did not affect the level of lactate in the pig blood serum but depressed the aggregation of blood platelets.

Experimental atherosclerosis model in domestic pigs. Part II. Electrocardiographic and morphologic investigation.

Experimental atherosclerosis was produced in domestic pigs by administration for 24 weeks a high lipid diet containing cholesterol and coconut oil. ECG changes were not uniform: negative T, prolonged intraventricular conduction, and premature ventricular beats were observed. Macroscopic and microscopic anatomo-pathological studies revealed atheromatous changes in the aorta.

A model of experimental atherosclerosis in pigs. Part III. Electroretinography and the diameter of retinal vessels.

Domestic pigs were fed with high lipid diet (HLD) for 24 weeks. Electroretinographic studies and the measurement of the diameter of retinal arterioles were investigated before and after the administration of HLD. The most significant change produced by HLD was negativization of electroretinogram. At the same time the diameter of retinal arterioles was significantly decreased.

An experimental model of hyperlipemia.

Rats were given two kinds of diet: fat-rich (coconut oil, cholesterol, cholic acid) and fat-carbohydrate diet (coconut oil, margarine, cholesterol, wheat flour) for a period of 18 weeks. In the blood serum the triglyceride-cholesterol level and the electrophoretic pattern of lipoproteins were determined. Experimental models of experimental hyperlipemia adequate to type IIb and IV according to Fredrickson were obtained.

A double-blind comparative evaluation of aspirin, paracetamol and paracetamol + caffeine (finimal) for their analgesic effectiveness.

A double-blind, cross-over trial was made of three analgesic preparations--paracetamol, paracetamol with caffeine (Finimal) and aspirin in the relief of postoperative pain in 72 orthopedic inpatients and in 144 ambulatory outpatients suffering form common idiopathic headache. The combination of paracetamol and caffeine (Finimal) in this study shows the greatest pain relief in both groups of patients. This evaluation supports the results of BOOY3 demonstrating the superiority of the paracetamol-caffeine combination to paracetamol alone or aspirin.

[ECG picture in rats exposed to the action of petroleum].

The male rats of Wistar strain were exposed to the vapours of arabic petroleum Abu-Dhaki Zakun at concentration 1500 mg/m(3) during 16 weeks, 6 times weekly per 90 minutes daily. The ECG examinations revealed progressive bradycardia, increase of the percentage of conduction disturbances appearing as the bundle-right branch block, changes of the shape of P deflection, decrease of the angle of inclination of QRS vector, and increase of the percentage of nonspecific changes of ST-T syndrome. The obtained results can suggest a noxious effect of petroleum on the heart muscle when given by inhalation in a determined concentration.

Local treatment of thrombophlebitis with essaven gel.

Essaven Gel contains aescin, heparin and essential phospholipids (EPL). It was administered locally in 15 patients suffering from thrombotic inflammation of tibial superficial veins. The effect of Essaven Gel on prostaglandin synthetase activity was also studied. In 12 patients a positive result was obtained in the form of anti-inflammatory action, diminution of pain, edema, excessive warmth and flushing. The anti-inflammatory action proceeds without any participation of prostaglandin synthetase.

A double-blind clinical trial of laxogas evacuant suppositories.

A double-blind study was carried out to evaluate Laxogas gas producing suppositories--in inpatients confined to bed for long periods, and in elderly outpatients with constipation. Laxogas was found to give positive results in 92 per cent of cases treated, the time for evacuation of the bowel ranging from 15--40 min. No side effects were noticed.
