Ultrastructural features of spindle microtubule organization during the nuclear division of Encephalitozoon hellem.

Ultrastructural studies were carried out to describe the nuclear division cycle of a strain of Encephalitozoon hellem isolated from an Italian AIDS patient. The nuclear division occurs during the proliferative vegetative phase and it is characterized by the intranuclear mitosis and by the lack of centrioles. The spindle termini are electron dense spindle plaques (ESPs), resembling to the spindle pole bodies (SPBs) of Saccharomycetes. The ESPs are bifacial organella forming microtubules on both nucleoplasic and cytoplasmic faces. In the outer layer of the spindle plaque are present vesicular elements lined by a double membrane of unknown function. The peculiar morphological features of E. hellem ESPs indicate that both intranuclear spindle and cytoplasmic microtubules are involved in the nuclear division.

Mechanisms of microsporidial cell division: ultrastructural study on Encephalitozoon hellem.

The mitotic process in microsporidian Encephalitozoon hellem, a known human pathogen, has been studied with the aim of elucidating some ultrastructural aspects of its nuclear division. The presence of a nuclear spindle, of "electrondense spindle plaques" associated with the nuclear envelope and of cytoplasmic double walled vesicles are reported. We suggest that these "electrondense spindle plaques" serve as foci for intranuclear and cytoplasmic microtubule arrangements, similar to the microtubule organizing centers within the centrosomes of animal cells. The extent to which the microsporidial division process is comparable with that of more familiar eukaryotes such as yeast cells is discussed.

Evidence of actin in the cytoskeleton of microsporidia.

Using transmission electron microscopy, immuno-electron microscopy, and biochemical techniques such as 2-D electrophoresis and immunoblotting, actin was found in all biological stages of the microsporidia Encephalitozoon hellem and Encephalitozoon cuniculi.

[Clinico-diagnostic applications of salivary yeast content].

The Authors present a review of the reports about methods developed in the latest years for screening high caries risk-subjects. They briefly discuss some basic concepts necessary to assess limits and further possibilities of development of such diagnostics methods.

[Radioactive isotopes in the diagnosis and therapy of tumors].

The Author, after some historical accounts, widely deals with physics and chemistry of the atom that are the necessary presupposition to the knowledge of the mechanisms of action of radio-isotopes. He hence exposes the radio-isotopes applications with special consideration to the action of radiations on the organism and the possibility of diagnosis and therapeutics with radioisotopes in oncology. The Author concludes that radio-isotopes must not be considered separately in the therapeutics of tumours, but as main component of the whole anti-tumour armament (surgical, consentional radiological, chemi-therapeutic) in which the immune-therapeutics is proving itself with fascinating possibilities.

[Gallstone ileus, observations on 13 cases].

The authors expose some considerations about clinical features of this unusual condition. Thirteen cases of gallstone ileus are reported. The medium age was 70 years. The postoperative course was regular for 12 cases, and only one patient died seven days after the operation.

[Immunological problems in oncology (author's transl)].

The Authors, after a view of the problems of immunology, regarding the most recent discoveries, deal with the conclusions about the immunological reactions in research and clinical oncology. Many specific antibodies, formed as a result of the tumor, have been discovered in the field of research. It is impossible to say the same about human tumors and the probable hypothesis are numerous. The results until now obtained, even if they don't give a definite response, show that the immune defense of the organism has extreme importance for the beginning and the development of tumors, therefore further research could be a contribution to the cure of cancer.
