Diagnosis and treatment of infection with Brucella abortus, biotype 5.

A case of brucellosis due to Brucella abortus, biotype 5, occurred in a bulk milk-tanker driver who collected milk from refrigerated tanks on 23 farms. The organism was isolated from blood cultures by using a serum dextrose broth containing antibiotics. Serological investigations indicate that both abortus and melitensis antigen suspensions should be used in the investigation of cases of suspected brucellosis. As Brucella abortus is an intracellular parasite heavy, prolonged, antibiotic therapy is necessary in the treatment of the disease. The danger of inadequate treatment of the acute disease is that it may become chronic, and response to antibiotic therapy in chronic brucellosis is not good.

Hepta-, hexa-, tetra- and dichloronaphthalene congeners as inducers of hepatic microsomal drug-metabolizing enzymes.

Pretreatment of immature male Wistar rats with 1,2,3,4,5,6,7-hepta-, 1,2,3,4,5,6,8-hepta- and 1,2,3,4,5,6-hexachloronaphthalene resulted in the induction of several hepatic microsomal drug-metabolizing enzymes. The enzymic activities, reduced cytochrome P-450:CO and ethylisocyanide binding difference spectra and electrophoretic mobilities of the induced microsomal proteins were comparable to those observed after administration of the classical inducer of microsomal aryl hydrocarbon hydroxylase, 3-methylcholanthrene. The 1,2,3,4,5,6,7-heptachloronaphthalene congener, which is fully substituted in the lateral 2,3,6 and 7 positions, was more potent than the 1,2,3,4,5,6,8-hepta- and the 1,2,3,4,5,6-hexachloronaphthalene congeners which contain only 3 lateral chloro substituents. 1,2,3,4-Tetra- and several lower chlorinated naphthalenes were inactive as inducers of microsomal aryl hydrocarbon hydroxylase. The effects of structure on the induction activities of the polychlorinated naphthalenes were similar to those observed for other halogenated aryl hydrocarbons.

A critical evaluation of ultrasonic monitoring of superovulation in cattle.

This study evaluated real time B-mode ultrasonic monitoring for scanning ovaries of cows superovulated using eCG (1500 or 3000 i.u.). Follicular growth was monitored after stimulation and follicles categorized according to size. Numbers of large (> or = 10 mm) follicles correlated weakly (r = 0.31) with numbers of luteal structures formed subsequently. Timing of ovulation was confirmed by comparison with peak LH and plasma progesterone concentrations. Ovulation was visible on scanning but quantitation of corpora haemorrhagica was not accurate in superovulated ovaries. Luteal structures counted at scanning correlated significantly with findings at post mortem (r = 0.75; P < 0.01) but enumeration of structures was inaccurate. Scanning consistently underestimated luteal structures. Numbers of observed luteal structures correlated weakly with embryo recovery (r = 0.36). It was concluded that the presence of luteinized follicles greatly reduced the accuracy of identification of structures in superovulated ovaries.

Hyperactivated motility of human spermatozoa: a review of physiological function and application in assisted reproduction.

Hyperactivated motility is a specific movement pattern which has been recognized in mammalian spermatozoa for over 25 years. During this time, it has been established that hyperactivation is part of the complex process of sperm capacitation, which is necessary before fertilization can occur. The recent introduction of computed sperm motility analysis has allowed detailed studies of sperm movement characteristics to be undertaken, and evidence is accumulating that hyperactivated motility may correlate with fertility. In this review, the physiological consequences of hyperactivated motility, methods of measurement and their application in assisted reproduction are discussed.

Quality assurance: the shape of things to come.

Quality assurance is a systematic approach to the delivery of consistent, high quality services. It requires the implementation of quality systems based on international quality standards. Modern quality practice has yet to be addressed within healthcare.
