Use of recombinant LH in a group of unselected IVF patients.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the use of recombinant luteinizing hormone (rLH) supplementation in an unselected group of IVF patients undergoing follicular stimulation with recombinant follicle stimulating hormone (rFSH) after pituitary down-regulation. Group A comprised 122 cycles administered rFSH and rLH while group B included 331 cycles using rFSH only during the same period of treatment. There was no significant difference in any of the endocrine, embryological and outcome parameters measured. The implantation rate of 14.2% for group A compared with 9.8% for group B showed a positive trend (P = 0.055), but for patients in whom LH concentration was <1.0 IU/l at down-regulation or required excessive FSH stimulation, there was an increased incidence of implantation if rLH was supplemented. It was concluded that the addition of exogenous rLH to an unselected group of 'down-regulated' patients stimulated with rFSH appears to offer little benefit, but in the event of profound LH down-regulation or requirement for excessive exogenous FSH (>2500 IU), the rate of implantation might be improved.

Immunohistochemical identification and image analysis quantification of oestrogen and progesterone receptors in canine and feline meningioma.

Oestrogen and progesterone receptor expression has been detected in human meningioma; in canine and feline meningiomas, however, the identification of steroid receptors requires further investigation. Fourteen meningiomas obtained from nine dogs and five cats were examined immunohistochemically for oestrogen receptors (ORs) and progesterone receptors (PRs). The immunolabelling reaction was quantified by light microscopy and image analysis. ORs were expressed in low numbers in two feline meningiomas and in one canine meningioma. PRs were more numerous, with more extensive tissue labelling. Conventional linear regression analysis showed that OR expression was not significant as compared with PR expression. PR expression was lowest in meningiomas with a high proliferation index, as determined by Ki67 expression. Conventional linear regression analysis between PR and Ki67 concentration confirmed a significant indirect relationship.

[The psychic skin: principles and prospectives of intervention in psychodermatology].

The skin represents the best metaphor of functioning mind taken from the physical or material reality to consider the psychic reality and as result of a metaphoric action retaining and bearing the signs of a deep level of "feeling" where the first psychic organizations are structured or "emerge" from the early sensorial experiences, initially diffused, aspecific and transmodal. In this paper we present a clinical and research experience in psychodermatology beginning from the study of the anxiety and depression levels, the history of the psychoaffective development and the role of traumatic events or loss experiences. We also explore the importance of the patient attachment system, and the implications all these factors have in the psychopatology and treatment of dermopatic patients.

[Estimating the grade of patient satisfaction at the bone marrow transplantation department in Florence hospitals].

The satisfaction of the patients admitted to the bone marrow transplant unit of Careggi Hospital was evaluated by the nursing team. The aim of the evaluation was to measure the level of satisfaction for the nursing care and services and the areas of improvement. The questionnaire, with 23 questions referring to 5 areas (hotel care, Nurses' reliability, Ability to reassure, to answer to patients' needs and Empathy) derived from the conceptual model of Servqual. Ninety patients were given (or mailed) the questionnaire during a follow-up visit. Patients were asked to answer the questions evaluating each aspect on a scale from 1 (falls short of expectation) to 10 (exceeds all expectations). The answers show a very high satisfaction (> 8) for all the areas except for the food that reported a medium score of 5.2. Further analysis will allow a better understanding of the causes of dissatisfaction.

[Water as risk factor for helminthiasis in domestic ruminants in the central and southern Italy and zoonotic risk].

The findings of recent epidemiological surveys regarding the distribution of helminths in sheep, cattle, and buffaloes in central and southern Italy show that the presence of water in breeding, such as streams, canals, brooks, rivers and lakes, is a risk factor for the following helminths, agents of emerging zoonosis: Fasciola hepatica, Dicrocoelium dendriticum, Trichostrongylus spp., Ostertagia spp., Nematodirus spp., Haemonchus spp., Bunostomum spp., and Oesophagostomum spp. The Authors report up-to-date data on the distribution of the above cited helminths, as well as their essential morphological and biological characteristics and their zoonotic role.

TNF-related apoptosis-inducing ligand (TRAIL) and erythropoiesis: a role for PKC epsilon.

The regulation of the hematopoietic stem cell pool size and the processes of cell differentiation along the hematopoietic lineages involve apoptosis. Among the different factors with a recognized activity on blood progenitor cells, TRAIL - a member of the TNF family of cytokines - has an emerging role in the modulation of normal hematopoiesis.PKC(epsilon) levels are regulated by EPO in differentiating erythroid progenitors and control the protection against the apoptogenic effect of TRAIL. EPO-induced erythroid CD34 cells are insensitive to the apoptogenic effect of TRAIL between day 0 and day 3, due to the lack of specific surface receptors expression. Death receptors appear after day 3 of differentiation and consequently erythroid cells become sensitive to TRAIL up to day 9/10, when the EPO-driven up-regulation of PKC epsilon intracellular levels inhibits the TRAIL-mediated apoptosis, via Bcl-2. In the time interval between day 3 and 9, therefore, the number of erythroid progenitors can be limited by the presence of soluble or membrane-bound TRAIL present in the bone marrow microenvironment.
