[Valproic acid, a comparison between 2 methods of determination: immunoenzymology and high performance liquid chromatography].

Valproic acid is a very commonly used anti-epileptic drug which requires regular monitoring. The authors consider the assay of this drug by means of 2 techniques: Syva's homogeneous phase immuno-enzymatic technique adapted by Du Pont de Nemours for his automatic clinical analyser and high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The precision of the immuno-enzymatic technique is insufficient for concentrations of valproic acid of between 70 and 35 mumol/l (coefficient of variation: 27.0 and 22.0 per cent respectively). The precision of this method for concentrations of valproic acid of 45 and 205 mumol/l is good (coefficient of variation: 8.5 and 8.2 per cent respectively). For concentrations of valproic acid of between 347 and 867 mumol/l, the precision of the immunoenzymological is very good and comparable to that of high performance liquid chromatography (coefficient of variation: 5.9 and 3.8 per cent). For all of the above concentrations of valproic acid, the coefficients of variation obtained with high performance liquid chromatography were less than 5 per cent. Comparison by means of the t test for paired series demonstrated a significant difference between the results of the 2 techniques, with a risk of error of p less than 0.01. The coefficient of correlation between the 2 techniques was 0.96. However, Eksborg's representation shows a difference between the 2 assay methods for concentrations of valproic acid of less than 200 mumol/l, with higher values with HPLC.

Dietary intake data: usefulness and limitations.

In past decades, the main objectives of nutrition surveys were to define nutritional status at the time of the study, to cross-sectionally describe dietary patterns of consumption and food preparation practices, and to identify areas for improvement. Nowadays, the need for ongoing evaluation of nutritional status of individuals and of population is gaining recognition. The present paper, in discussing usefulness and limitations of dietary intake data, will focus on the importance of considering nutrition as a component of overall quality of life as well as a discipline that gains to be integrated to other disciplinary fields such as medicine, biochemistry, immunology, anthropometry and agribusiness. In this respect, the present paper will discuss the methodology of dietary data collection, the various uses of dietary data collected at the individual, community and general population levels and finally will try to define new vistas in regard to emphasis and tools for future dietary intake studies.

[Apolipoproteins and glycosylated hemoglobin in the young insulin-dependent diabetic].

Apolipoproteins A and B, total cholesterol, triglycerides, HDL, LDL, VLDL cholesterol and glycosylated hemoglobin levels were measured in 81 children and adolescents with juvenile-onset diabetes. There were 41 males and 40 females aged 7 to 22 years. They were separated into 3 groups depending on severity: G1 (well controlled diabetes), G2 (partly controlled diabetes), G3 (poorly controlled diabetes). In boys, triglycerides levels were significantly high in group G1, apolipoprotein B, total cholesterol, triglycerides, VLDL cholesterol levels and Alc glycosylated hemoglobin were raised in group G3. Furthermore, there was a positive correlation between the percentage of Alc glycosylated hemoglobin and LDL cholesterol level. In girls, triglycerides levels were significantly high in group G1, as were apolipoprotein B, triglycerides and VLDL cholesterol levels in group G2 and apolipoprotein B, triglycerides, LDL cholesterol, VLDL cholesterol levels and the percentage of Alc glycosylated hemoglobin in group G3. A positive correlation between the percentage of Alc glycosylated hemoglobin and LDL cholesterol level was also found.

Ultrastructure of glassy cell carcinoma of cervix.

The ultrastructural characteristics of a glassy cell carcinoma (GCC) of the cervix are presented and discussed in relation to differential diagnosis and pathogenesis. GCC is composed of four morphologically distinct but pathogenetically interrelated epithelial cell types. These include undifferentiated cells; squamous cells; gland cells; and intermediate cells containing both squamous and glandular characteristics. GCC may arise either from endometrial-type cells or subcolumnar reserve cells of the endocervix and should be distinguished from large-cell nonkeratinizing squamous cell carcinoma.
