Developing support programs for dentists with infectious disease.

The American Dental Association (ADA) has developed many resources to address growing concerns regarding HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) issues in dental practice, including continuing education courses, workshops, journal articles, and monographs. In addition, the ADA Council on Dental Practice has established a network for dentists with HIV/AIDS (acquired immune deficiency syndrome). The network has been named PEERS, which stands for Prevention, Education, Ethics, Resources, and Support. This paper provides guidelines for developing programs in each state to address the needs of dentists with HIV/AIDS.

Intervention with chemically dependent nurses: a paradigm for professional retention.

Intervention is a key component of the identification and treatment referral process for chemically dependent health care professionals. Effective intervention with nurses is based on carefully gathered evidence of impaired nursing practice presented to the affected nurse by a team of nurses (eg, an administrator, a supervisor, and a peer) in a supportive environment. The intervention techniques used by the Nurse Recovery Program, a two-year communitywide pilot program of the Tampa (Florida) Area Hospital Council, resulted in 60% of those who underwent treatment for chemical dependence returning to practice.
