Telehealth: promise or peril?

As you walk down the hall of the clinic, you see through the window millions of jewels as the sun is reflected off the ice on the Bering Sea. You enter the consultation room and greet your patient, Missy Becker. You have arranged for a consult with Dr. Sarah McKinnon about a lesion that Missy has. Turning on the computer you tell Missy that Dr. McKinnon, a dermatologist in Chicago, will be examining her today. When the computer monitor comes alive, you say hello to Dr. McKinnon and introduce her to Missy. You set up the camera that has finger like probes so that Dr. McKinnon can manipulate both the camera and probes. Using these touch-sensitive probes she examines Missy s lesion just as she would if she were physically with you in the consultation room. "Good news," Dr. McKinnon says after a thorough examination, "As far as I can tell now, the lesion is benign. Do a biopsy and put it under the telemicroscope so I can see it." The fact that Dr. McKinnon is in Chicago and you and Missy are separated by over 3,000 miles does not even evoke a comment.

Computer-assisted instruction: a learner's viewpoint.

Computer-assisted instruction (CAI) is becoming increasingly common in nursing. Insight into factors that facilitate or impede this process was gained through interviews with nursing students who had used one of four computer programs. Content analysis of these interviews found that the CAI experience includes many components. Three overall categories of comments emerged, pertaining to (a) the learner, (b) the learning environment, and (c) software design, including interactive features, how the learning design uses these features to achieve the learning objectives, and the content. This paper discusses elements that facilitate or hinder learning in each area and illustrates each with quotes from the interviews. This article also suggests positive actions that can increase learning through CAI use.

Nursing education resources on the World Wide Web.

The Internet offers the promise of quick and convenient access to large amounts of up-to-date information. There are many resources on the Internet for nurses and nurse educators, but they can be challenging to locate and the information must be evaluated carefully. In this article, some nursing resources on the Internet are analyzed and criteria for evaluating information are suggested. With a little patience and persistence, nurse educators will find exploring the Internet rewarding and informative.

The Internet unraveled.

Although a fairly recent phenomenon in our culture, the Internet and its features have enjoyed a meteoric rise in use. E-mail, mailing lists, news groups, and forums provide Internet users the ability to network worldwide. The WWW, with its ease of use, has made accessing information easy, but has also created a need to learn to find and then to evaluate the information that is found. This article explores the above facets of the Internet and provides suggestions for using e-mail, locating mailing lists, searching the WWW, and evaluating the information found there. A vocabulary list is provided to assist with unfamiliar terminology. Words in the vocabulary are in boldface type the first time they are used.
