Percutaneous renal biopsies: accuracy, safety, and indications.

Fifty-one percutaneous renal needle biopsies were performed on 46 patients. Initial biopsy was adequate for diagnosis in 89% of patients. When a second biopsy was performed, this accuracy increased to 98%. Thirty-four of 51 (67%) biopsies were for renal masses and 17 (33%) for medical indications. Computed tomographic guidance was utilized in 94% of cases. Biopsies of renal masses were performed with 18-21-gauge needles, while biopsies for medical indications were performed with an 18-gauge cutting needle or 14-gauge Trucut. A rate of serious complications of 6% was noted.

Early handling increases hippocampal long-term potentiation in young rats.

The hippocampal formation undergoes major anatomical and physiological changes postnatally, and thus might be expected to be particularly sensitive to early handling effects. Long-term potentiation (LTP) in the hippocampal formation, a form of brain plasticity thought to be important in learning and memory, was examined in young rats following early handling or control treatments. The amplitude of LTP was reliably greater in rats receiving the early handling regime. Possible mechanisms and consequences of enhanced LTP were discussed.

Primary linitis plastica of the colon and rectum. Report of two cases.

Primary linitis plastica of the colon and rectum is an uncommon entity. Sixty-six cases have been reported in the English literature. Two new cases are reported, one of the transverse colon with widespread metastases and the other of the right colon extending from the appendix to the distal resection margin of the transverse colon. Some clinical and pathologic characteristics of the tumor are discussed, based on a review of the literature.

Hippocampal contributions to cortical plasticity.

The hippocampal complex and neocortex are both integrally important in memory function, in particular as regards memory for episodes and knowledge about the world that is derived from them. It is traditionally assumed that the role of the hippocampus is time-limited, after which retrieval of episodic memory depends only upon neocortical stores. A number of lines of evidence indicate that this traditional view is incorrect. We propose that the hippocampal complex is always necessary for retrieval of episodes and their contextual frame, and that hippocampal-neocortical interactions contribute instead to the extraction of semantic information to be stored in the neocortex.
