Langerhans cell histiocytosis is most common in children and is unusual in the elderly. We describe 3 cases of langerhans cell histiocytosis limited to the skin in elderly patients. Biopsy specimens showed a dermal infiltrate abutting the epidermis composed of atypical langerhans cells with abundant eosinophilic cytoplasm and a "kidney-shaped" nucleus. Immunoperoxidase stain CD1a was positive in all 3 cases and S-100 stain was positive in 2. Electron microscopy revealed Birbeck granules in the cytoplasm of the atypical langerhans cells in 2 cases. Langerhans cell histiocytosis with skin involvement has a chronic course with an overall good prognosis. However, cutaneous manifestations may precede systemic involvement by many years.

BACKGROUND: Phenolformaldehyde resins, especially the para-tertiary-butylphenolformaldehyde resin (PTBP-FR), are widely used in industry and in numerous materials of everyday use, such as glues, adhesives, or inks. They can cause many occupational and nonoccupational cases of dermatitis. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Forty-one patients with positive patch test results to PTBP-FR were selected for this study. They were patch-tested with a series of chemically related compounds and cross-reactions were noted. RESULTS: Phenolformaldehyde resin (PF-R) was frequently positive (65.8%), whereas other compounds gave a much smaller number of positive results. Cases of occupational exposure (24.4%), location of the dermatitis (hands were involved in 46.3% of cases), and possible sources of exposure (shoes were the responsible agent in 12.2% of cases) were evaluated. CONCLUSIONS: Phenolformaldehyde resins are an important cause of contact dermatitis and must be studied chemically and clinically to improve the prognosis of sensitized patients.

In 1988, 633 patients attending our Allergology Center underwent patch testing with the standard series recommended by the Gruppo Italiano Ricerca Dermatiti da Contatto e Ambientali. Of these, 576 patients completed the test correctly and their results were evaluated statistically. Nickel, cobalt, and potassium dichromate were the three most common sensitizers; concomitant positive reactions were present at significant levels. The authors discuss environmental and occupational exposure to contact allergens and correlate the major sites of dermatitis with the sensitivity to each metal in patients of both sexes.

Seventy-five patients with anogenital warts were biopsied in the Center for Sexually Transmitted Disease of Galliera Hospital (Genoa). Bioptic specimens were processed for histologic examination, immunohistochemistry using polyclonal antibodies against HPV capsid common antigens and in situ hybridization using HPV 6/11, 16/18, 31/35/51 DNA probes. The aim of the study was to detect patients positive for HPV 16/18, 31/35/51 DNA probes. These HPV types have a higher oncogenic potential and patients with lesions harbouring them are considered to be at risk for progression to malignancy. These patients should be followed up carefully and periodically for early detection of new lesions and neoplastic transformation.
Thirty-nine HIV-negative men, without apparent genital warts, were evaluated for evidence of subclinical genital condylomata by visual examination of the genitalia with colposcopy after the application of 5% acetic acid. 24 patients (group I) had a history of recurrent genital condylomata; 8 (group II) were sexual partners of women with HPV-related lesions and 7 (group III) presented another sexually transmitted disease. Under colposcopic magnification, acetowhite areas were biopsied for conventional histology and in situ hybridization using 6/11, 16/18 and 31/35/51 HPV-DNA probes. Colposcopy and histologic features were positive for condylomata acuminata in 16 patients of group III (14%). HPV 16/18 - whose oncogenic potentiality is well known - was detected in 3 patients: of these, one patient of group I presented a histologic picture suggestive of bowenoid papulosis.
In January 1989, the Center for Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STD) of Galliera Hospital-Genoa was equipped with a network of 5 Personal Computers connected by a Token Ring to another Personal Computer which is the "server" unit. The Authors report their experiences in the use of the computer system and examine the advantages of networking in the management of a Center for Sexually Transmitted Disease.
A case of a woman of 55-years-old with verrucous lesions localized on the dorsa of her feet and hands is reported. The light microecopy reveals marked hyperkeratosis with some degree of parakeratosis, epidermal atrophy and light lympho-histiocytic infiltrate in the papillary dermis. A diagnosis of hyperkeratosis lenticularis perstans is made on the basis of the physical examination and histologic findings. A brief review of the literature on the genetic, ultrastructural characteristics and pathogenesis of the disease is made.
This paper deals with the problem of representing and generating unconstrained aiming movements of a limb by means of a neural network architecture. The network produced time trajectories of a limb from a starting posture toward targets specified by sensory stimuli. Thus the network performed a sensory-motor transformation. The experimenters trained the network using a bell-shaped velocity profile on the trajectories. This type of profile is characteristic of most movements performed by biological systems. We investigated the generalization capabilities of the network as well as its internal organization. Experiments performed during learning and on the trained network showed that: (i) the task could be learned by a three-layer sequential network; (ii) the network successfully generalized in trajectory space and adjusted the velocity profiles properly; (iii) the same task could not be learned by a linear network; (iv) after learning, the internal connections became organized into inhibitory and excitatory zones and encoded the main features of the training set; (v) the model was robust to noise on the input signals; (vi) the network exhibited attractor-dynamics properties; (vii) the network was able to solve the motor-equivalence problem. A key feature of this work is the fact that the neural network was coupled to a mechanical model of a limb in which muscles are represented as springs. With this representation the model solved the problem of motor redundancy.
