Absorption of irrigating fluid during laser photocoagulation of the endometrium in the treatment of menorrhagia.

Twelve women undergoing laser ablation of the uterus for menorrhagia were studied by haemodynamic, biochemical and haematological indices including radioisotope dilution studies of plasma volume to assess the degree of fluid absorption into the circulation during laser surgery. There was a significant rise in central venous pressure and serum chloride and a significant decrease in plasma protein, albumin and haematocrit. Absorption of the irrigating fluid used was demonstrated and in one woman whose case history is illustrated this was excessive.

Effects of chondroitin-4-sulphate on survival, sizes and ultrastructures of cultured WI-38 fibroblasts and fibroblasts from progeria patients.

WI-38 fibroblasts from 'normal' individuals and skin fibroblasts from patients displaying classical symptoms of progeria (accelerated aging) were maintained in tissue culture with and without periodic supplementation of 0.25 mg/ml of chondroitin-4-sulphate (C-4-S) during the ultimate phase of slowed division (phase 3). When C-4-S was not present in the culture medium, cell counts (not necessarily indicative of relative rates of cell division) and mean cell volumes were lower, and intracellular aberrations were higher, in both types of fibroblasts (normal and progeria) at, and even before, the 47th-50th and 13th-16th passages, respectively. The authors emphasise effects of C-4-S in preserving normal ultrastructure, pointing out that C-4-S does not fulfil the criteria of a mitogen and that any possible increases in rates of mitosis following supplementation with this substance are probably secondary to an enhanced metabolic environment.

Personality testing in 226 patients with urinary incontinence.

Two hundred and twenty-six female patients undergoing investigation for urinary incontinence completed the Eysenck Personality Inventory questionnaire. The results of the questionnaire were correlated with the symptomatology and urodynamic findings. Incontinence and neuroticism were found to be related. No special relationship was found between neuroticism and detrusor overactivity, although this has been reported in other smaller series.

Duration of resistance to experimental footrot infection in Romney and Merino sheep vaccinated with Bacteroides nodosus oil adjuvant vaccine.

Groups of 10-12 Romney and Merino wethers were challenged simultaneously with homologous experimental footrot infection after having received the second of 2 doses of Bacteroides nodosus (strain 198) vaccine 0, 4, 8, 12, 16 and 20 weeks previously. Inoculations were carried out 28 days apart and unvaccinated sheep of both breeds were challenged as controls. Most Romneys that had been vaccinated up to 16 weeks prior to challenge were resistant to footrot whereas 8 of 10 controls were susceptible. This resistance was lost by about 20 weeks after vaccination. By contrast, protection against challenge in vaccinated Merinos lasted only about 4-5 weeks, although residual benefits of vaccination were apparent after longer intervals from the reduced number and severity of foot lesions among vaccinates compared with controls. Agglutinin titres, which did not differ markedly after similar intervals between Romneys and Merinos, reached maximum levels between 4 and 8 weeks after the second vaccine dose and subsequently declined. Although peak titres were generally recorded at the time of maximum protection in Merinos, the relationship between agglutinin levels and resistance in the Romneys was ill-defined.
