Esthetic parameters of mandibular anterior teeth.

Designing mandibular anterior fixed prostheses for good esthetics involves many factors. Factors which are, at least in part, functionally or phonetically determined are degree of vertical and horizontal overlap, curve and height of the teeth, anterior placement of the incisal edge, and incisal contacts. Design factors which must be appreciated and manipulated by the dentist in his prescription and in the fabrication techniques are overlap, incisal wear and facets, and height and variety of contact area. It is these design factors which are crucial to the esthetic success of a mandibular anterior fixed partial denture.

Rheology of luting cements.

A rheometer has been developed to simulate the extrusion of luting cement from beneath a full crown during seating using clinically realistic shear rates. Five luting cements were studied, and differences in rheological behavior were illustrated. These measurements demonstrate the importance of consideration of the effects of shear rate on viscosity when evaluating a cement for optimal clinical utilization.

Heat-released stress in acrylic dentures.

Dimensional changes in an acrylic resin denture blank that are sufficient to cause changes in fit on a gypsum cast occur primarily when the dentures are heated in water to a temperature of 90 degrees C or more. The poor correlation between observed fit and the intermolar distance change indicates that the dimensional change of dentures is much more complex than suggested previously and may be the product of factors that are not as yet fully understood. Enough heat to cause distortion of the denture can be produced during the process of grinding the denture. It should be recognized by the dentist, the dental assistant, and the dental laboratory technician that denture resins are sensitive to the techniques that are used in finishing. Overheating even small regions may allow localized dimensional changes that result in distortion of the denture.

Sequencing platinum foil matrix removal in postceramic soldering of the collarless veneered retainer.

Postceramic soldering of collarless veneered retainers in which the porcelain margins were formed with a platinum foil matrix technique was investigated. The purpose of the study was to determine if removing the platinum foil matrix before or after indexing and soldering procedures would affect the porcelain margin integrity in fixed partial dentures. Prostheses were fabricated on a nickel-chromium laboratory model using both sequences. Six test cycles were performed. Each cycle included one soldering with matrix support and one without the matrix, for a total of 12 solderings. The fixed partial dentures were compared for degree of marginal seating with a measuring microscope and for configuration changes at the porcelain margins with scanning electron micrographs. In the microscopic analysis of marginal closure, soldering without foil matrix was statistically equal to soldering with foil in place. Removal of the platinum foil matrices prior to indexing provided for no further seating of the metal ceramic retainers. Evaluation by scanning electron microscopy demonstrated distinct configuration changes in the porcelain margins for the specimens soldered without matrix support.
