Carpal and tarsal osteolysis.

This report describes the symptoms, clinical course and radiological features in three cases of idiopathic carpotarsal osteolysis. Before signs of extensive osteolysis were noted, one of our patients showed flattening, loss of harmonious curvature and minimal osteoporosis of carpal and tarsal bones, all early radiological signs which have not been described previously. We discuss the findings, classification and our ideas as to the cause of the disorder.

[Nonsurgical treatment of pulmonary arteriovenous aneurysms].

Four patients with single or multiple pulmonary arteriovenous aneurysms, including three with Rendu-Osler's disease, were treated by occlusion with metallic spirals of the supplying pedicles during angiography. Results are compared with those of 16 cases treated by the same method and reported in the literature. The technique and its therapeutic indications are discussed based on these 20 cases and a review of documented data concerning 502 other cases with these aneurysms.

[Topographic radiologic anatomy of the right subcarinal and retrobronchial pulmonary recess (author's transl)].

Depending on the size of the subcarinal and retrobronchial recess the medial wall of the right and perhaps the left main bronchus can be recognized. The medial extension of the recess is very variable. On lateral films with slight anterior rotation of the right shoulder, the posterior wall of the right main bronchus can be shown in 97% of patients. Awareness of this recess and its boundaries is essential for diagnosis of subcarinal and tracheobronchial node enlargement. The following 4 signs will assist in diagnosis: 1. The dorsal margin of enlarged nodes may be recognized posterior and inferior to the carina. 2. The posterior wall of the right main bronchus can no longer be seen. 3. The medial wall of the right main bronchus can no longer be seen. 4. Clearer demonstration of the right main bronchus or bronchus intermedius occurs, due to an "air bronchogram" effect. Due to the application of these 4 signs, enlargements of the subcarinal or tracheobronchial nodes can be recognized, at a stage where the tracheal bifurcation is not yet splayed, and when the nodes have not yet caused bronchostenosis.

[Colonic complications of pancreatitis. A report on 39 cases (author's transl)].

Colonic complications of pancreatitis are not infrequent occurrences, as illustrated by the fact that the authors have personally treated 39 such cases. Lesions are found in the colon at sites which correspond perfectly to diffusion of pancreatic necrotic lesions along mesenteric pathways as described by Meyers. They occur mainly in the left colic flexure (17 cases) and transverse colon (10 cases) but may affect the ascending (6 cases) and descending (4 cases) colon by diffusion of the pancreatitis into the anterior extrarenal space. These topographical characteristics, associated with the extrinsic and inflammatory nature of the lesions, produce a very specific and typical radiological syndrome which should assist diagnosis.

A method for the measurement of dimensional change of dental amalgam.

A dimensional change occurs during the setting of a dental amalgam. A measurement circuit, which makes it possible to register these changes, is introduced. To this purpose strain gages were used. The registration instrument is tested by comparing different dental amalgam products.

[Chronic unilateral obstruction to pulmonary venous return. A study on 6 cases and review of the published literature (author's transl)].

The authors describe 6 cases of unilateral obstruction to pulmonary venous return: two cases of Halasz syndrome and postoperative obstruction of the reimplanted collector vein, one patient with Halasz syndrome and spontaneous obstruction of the vein in the form of a scimitar, one case of neoplastic invasion of the atrium-vein junction, one with unilateral absence of the right intra- and extraparenchymatous regions of the pulmonary veins, and lastly, a case of juxta-auricular interruption in the right pulmonary veins. The anatomy and physiopathology of the collateral venous pathways are briefly described, together with the relations between systemic arterial hypervascularization and pulmonary venous obstruction. The authors then review the radiological, clinical, and angiohemodynamic features of the unilateral venous obstruction syndrome, and conclude that precise diagnosis of venous occlusion, its location, and its tolerance are essential for deciding the therapeutic measures required.

[Comparative studies between various amalgams].

A number of dental amalgam products have been compared in the context of a thesis. Four products, each of them possessing different characteristics, have been selected. Six Eighty Amalgam Alloy is a conventional product; Fluor Alloy contains a quantity of SnF2; Amalcap non gamma2 belongs to the group of the so-called non gamma2-alloys; Indiloy is spherical and contains indium. Each product was subjected to a series of tests and investigations: structure, dimensional changes after condensation, compressive strength, behaviour during a relaxation-test and resistance to corrosion. Indiloy was the product with the most interesting structure and it could be ascertained the mercury especially attacked silver and indium of the original alloy. Thus a sort of matrix is formed. The measuring of the dimensional changes was done by introducing a new method. Fluor Alloy and Indiloy present a behaviour that differs a lot from the expected one: at first a contraction followed by a more important expansion. A relaxation-test is an alternative to the creep-test and the connection between both is demonstrated. Combining the results of the resistances to the compressive forces with those of the relaxation-tests shows Indiloy possesses superior mechanical properties while those of Six Eighty Amalgam Alloy are rather inferior. A final series of tests concerns the resistance to corrosion. Amalcap non gamma2 and Indiloy have a much greater rough resistance to corrosion than the two other ones.

Narrow superior mediastinum and pseudomasses: CT features.

The authors report three cases of abnormal chest radiography mimicking mediastinal masses. These radiographic findings were unrelated to any pathology, were discovered in asymptomatic patients, and must be considered consequences of unusually narrow thoracic inlets. Mean and standard deviations of the anteroposterior diameter of the superior mediastinum are given. Computed tomography of the chest yielded valuable diagnostic information and made it possible to exclude mediastinal masses.
