A double-blind comparative evaluation of aspirin, paracetamol and paracetamol + caffeine (finimal) for their analgesic effectiveness.

A double-blind, cross-over trial was made of three analgesic preparations--paracetamol, paracetamol with caffeine (Finimal) and aspirin in the relief of postoperative pain in 72 orthopedic inpatients and in 144 ambulatory outpatients suffering form common idiopathic headache. The combination of paracetamol and caffeine (Finimal) in this study shows the greatest pain relief in both groups of patients. This evaluation supports the results of BOOY3 demonstrating the superiority of the paracetamol-caffeine combination to paracetamol alone or aspirin.

Chronic alcoholism and the pancreas.

In rats given 15% solution of ethyl alcohol (v/v) instead of drinking water adlibitum for eight months, histochemical analysis showed a dictinct fall in activities of the oxidative enzymes (succinate and lactate dehydrogenases, DPNH-diaphorase) in the centro-acinar cells of the pancreas and in the islets of Langerhans.

Local treatment of thrombophlebitis with essaven gel.

Essaven Gel contains aescin, heparin and essential phospholipids (EPL). It was administered locally in 15 patients suffering from thrombotic inflammation of tibial superficial veins. The effect of Essaven Gel on prostaglandin synthetase activity was also studied. In 12 patients a positive result was obtained in the form of anti-inflammatory action, diminution of pain, edema, excessive warmth and flushing. The anti-inflammatory action proceeds without any participation of prostaglandin synthetase.

Administration, Topical↗

Peripheral blood and myelogram in white rats chronically poisoned with ethanol and receiving essential phospholipids.

The influence of chronic administration of ethyl alcohol in white rats (15% solution instead of water, ad libitum, during 8 months) and essential phospholipids on the peripheral blood picture and myelogram was studied. Hemoglobin, erythrocyte counts and leukocytes dropped uniformly in the group of animals poisoned with alcohol. Stimultaneous administration of essential phospholipids exerted a protective effect with respect to the fall in hemoglobin and erythrocyte counts.

Alcoholic Intoxication↗

Changes in the heart in chronic experimental alcoholism.

In studies on the effect of chronic experimental alcoholism on the heart, rats were given 15% (v/v) solution of ethyl alcohol ad libitum instead of water to drink for 8 months. Histologic examination revealed degenerative changes in the myocardial fibers, and histochemical examination diminished activity of oxidative enzymes.
