The thick sialoglycoprotein coat of the glomerular epithelial cells is a part of the glomerular filtration barrier. It can be demonstrated in paraffin histoslogy by means of the colloidal iron procedure. We have studied the special requirements of tissue processing to obtain reproducible results by this staining method. The requirements include proper fixation, avoiding heat during sectioning and ample rehydration. We have further tested a colloidal iron-PAS procedure for simultaneous demonstration of the glomerular epithelial coat and the basement membrane.

A new catheter with detachable balloon for vascular occlusion was successfully used for permanent occlusion of the internal carotid artery as well as branches of the external carotid artery in 5 pigs. The technique is intended for clinical use in man.
An open, non-comparative clinical trial of cefaclor in adults with acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis (54 patients) or pneumonia (24 patients) is reported. The dosage of cefaclor used was either 250 mg or 500 mg taken orally three times daily. Clinical cure was obtained in 39 of 42 (93%) of patients on the lower dose and 32 of 33 (97%) on the higher dose. Side effects were minimal and the antibiotic was very well tolerated. Microbiological evaluation was possible in 32 of 75 (43%) of patients in whom potential pathogens were identified before treatment. Microbiological 'cure' was achieved in 17 of 32 (53%), the majority of whom had received the higher dose. The lack of correlation between the clinical and microbiological results cast further doubts on the value of the standard sputum culture methods in the diagnosis and management of lower respiratory tract infection. Cefaclor is useful in the management of acute lower respiratory tract infections by virtue of its excellent clinical efficacy and safety.
Serum and CSF specimens from 16 schizophrenic patients and 18 nonpsychiatric controls were tested by radioimmunoassay for immunoglobulin G antibody of capsid, envelope and excreted antigens of herpes simplex type 1 virus. There were no significant differences in the antibody levels between the schizophrenic patients and the controls. The etiological role of viruses and virus-like agents in schizophrenia and some methodological aspects are discussed.

Plasma morphine concentrations were measured by a radioimmunoassay technique following the intramuscular administration of morphine 0.2 mg/kg body weight as a preoperative medication. The highest plasma concentrations were obtained about one hour after the administration of the drug and there was a sevenfold variation in these concentrations between individuals. For 24 hr following a single intramuscular injection, there was measurable quantities of morphine or its metabolites in the plasma. In healthy patients who were undergoing a therapeutic abortion, there was no correlation between pain relief and the plasma concentration of morphine.
