ENHANCEMENTS OF ANTIBIOTIC ACTIVITY OF COLICINE K AND ALTERATION OF SEROLOGICAL PROPERTIES OF COLICINE K AND ENDOTOXINS.

Hemoglobin, its chains, and myoglobin enhance the antibiotic activity of colicine K. These proteins also interact with colicine K and other O antigens to alter their serological activity. The hemoglobin proteins did not alter the serological activities of three Pneumococcus polysaccharides or T4 bacteriophage DNA antigens but did alter the antigenic activity of fetuin. Interaction of hemoglobin and colicine K resulted in a retardation of colicine K antibiotic moiety as measured by gel filtration but did not affect the gel filtration properties of the lipopolysaccharide moiety.

SEROLOGICAL ANALYSES OF CELLULAR SLIME MOLD DEVELOPMENT. II. PREFERENTIAL LOSS, DURING MORPHOGENESIS, OF ANTIGENIC ACTIVITY ASSOCIATED WITH THE VEGETATIVE MYXAMOEBAE.

Sonneborn, D. R. (Brandeis University, Waltham, Mass.), L. Levine, and M. Sussman. Serological analyses of cellular slime mold development. II. Preferential loss, during morphogenesis, of antigenic activity associated with the vegetative myxamoebae. J. Bacteriol. 89:1092-1096. 1965.-A major antigenic component of Dictyostelium discoideum (vegetative myxamoebae) is retained during morphogenesis up to the final stages of fruiting-body construction. It is found in the cells constituting the stalk of the mature fruit but is undetectable in the spores. The nature of the preferential loss of antigen from this cell contingent is unknown. Antiserum prepared against the vegetative myxamoebae is cytotoxic and reduces cell viability by several orders of magnitude at dilutions of about 1:100.

TURBIDIMETRIC CHANGES ACCOMPANYING THE INTERACTION OF ENDOTOXIN AND THE ALPHA-CHAINS OF HUMAN HEMOGLOBIN.

Setlow, Peter (Brandeis University, Waltham, Mass.), Lawrence Levine, and Helen Van Vunakis. Turbidimetric changes accompanying the interaction of endotoxin and the alpha chains of human hemoglobin. J. Bacteriol. 89:1237-1243. 1965.-With the use of a turbidimetric assay, the effects of pH, ionic strength, anions and cations, and varying concentrations of reactants on the interaction of Escherichia coli endotoxin (prepared by the Boivin procedure) with the alpha chain of hemoglobin were studied. The reaction was found to be partially reversible by addition of NaCl or by addition of an excess of either reactant. The characteristics of the reaction indicated that complex formation between two multivalent molecules had taken place. The formation of the complex was inhibited by endotoxin (prepared by the Westphal procedure) and by the products which resulted from partial tryptic digestion of alpha chain.

IMMUNOCHEMICAL IDENTIFICATION OF PARATHYROID HORMONE IN NON-PARATHYROID NEOPLASMS ASSOCIATED WITH HYPERCALCEMIA.

1. Immunochemical cross-reactivity, but not identity, has been demonstrated between bovine parathyroid hormone and an antigen in biologically active extracts of human parathyroid tissue by quantitative C' fixation and C' fixation inhibition. 2. An antigen that fixes C' with rabbit antibody to bovine parathyroid hormone has been found in urea extracts of six human non-parathyroid neoplasms associated with a hypercalcemic syndrome mimicking primary hyperparathyroidism. Comparable extracts of control tissues and other tumors were serologically negative. 3. It is concluded that the tumor antigen is parathyroid hormone or a very closely related protein, and that its production by these neoplasms was the cause of the hypercalcemic syndrome in these six patients.
