Prevalence of mastoid infection in prehistoric Arizona Indians.

In view of th reported high prevalence of otitis media and mastoiditis in the present-day Indian inhabitants or Arizona, when an opportunity arose to examine the skulls of prehistoric Indians in the collection of the Arizona State Museum, University of Arizona, Tucson, Arizona, it was thought that determining the prevalence of mastoiditis in them might be helpful in the treatment and prevention of mastoid infections in the present-day population. Our findings are compared with those of two other studies of mastoiditis in prehistoric Indians in another area of the United States.

Causes of recurrent laryngeal nerve paralysis.

The recurrent laryngeal nerve in its course from the brain stem to the larynx follows a path that brings it in proximity to numerous structures. These structures can interfere with its function by pressure or by disruption of the nerve caused by disease invading the nerve. The various causes of recurrent laryngeal nerve paralysis that I have observed during the past 24 years are reported. In 134 patients with recurrent laryngeal nerve paralysis, the left recurrent nerve was most commonly involved. Malignant neoplasms of the lung and pulmonary tuberculosis were the most frequent causes of the paralysis.

Hearing aids & hearing deterioration.

The literature contains articles which report that the deterioration of hearing is increased by the use of hearing aids, and others which show that there is no increase. The results of our experience with 261 patients over a ten-year period show that there is no increase in hearing loss in the aided ear which can be attributed to the use of a hearing aid.
