Orthodontic treatment and demand of a cleft lip and palate patient.

Most orthodontists would agree the treatment plan followed in this case was a severe compromise; many oral surgeons will find it completely unacceptable. However, during the relatively short treatment time--a total of 12 months--the anterior crossbite was corrected and the patient got the front teeth she wanted. Demand or perceived need of the patient should always be the prime objective of any kind of treatment in order to have patient's cooperation. The patient and her parents are now very grateful and ready for the prosthodontic procedures. Although this case was not treated according to the need perceived by the specialists, the result is by all means acceptable and satisfactory to both parties.

Correlation of skeletal maturation with stature and body weight of southern Chinese girls in Hong Kong.

Correlations of skeletal maturation with stature and body weight were studied in one hundred and seventeen Southern Chinese girls aged eleven years nine months and twelve years three months born and brought up in Hong Kong. The skeletal maturation was assessed from the left hand and wrist radiographs by the Greulich and Pyle Atlas Method. The early maturers in skeletal development were significant taller and heavier than the late maturers with p less than 0.001.

"Wits" appraisal in southern Chinese children.

The sagittal difference between the maxillary and mandibular apical bases in orthodontic diagnosis and treatment planning can be evaluated by means of the angle ANB or alternatively, by means of the "Wits" appraisal. The lateral cephalometric radiographs of a randomly selected sample of 101 Southern Chinese children aged 10-15 years, with 55 males and 46 females were traced and analyzed by the standardized method taught to dental undergraduates. The "Wits" appraisal and angulation of the A-B line to the functional occlusal plane were added in order to generate data relevant to the local population, on whom the flatness of the nose-nasion-forehead region imposes a genuine difficulty in the identification of the cephalometric nasion. Data analyses were performed under landmark nasion. Data analyses were performed under different categories with respect to age groups, 10-12 years and 13-15 years; the types of malocclusion and sex. It was found that both the angular and linear measurements were comparable to the existing norms established for the Chinese population. The "Wits" appraisal values have to be modified in order to be applicable to this population with -4.9 millimeters and -4.5 millimeters being the normal values for male and female children respectively.

Unusual supernumerary teeth.

This case report describes the presence of 14 supernumerary teeth. Unique factors include symmetrical involvement in the canine and premolar regions of all four quadrants. The appropriate plan of treatment is left up to the reader.

Secular trend in skeletal maturation in southern Chinese girls in Hong Kong.

Southern Chinese girls aged 11 years 9 months to 12 years 3 months in Hong Kong have a mean skeletal age of 12.57 years assessed from the left hand and wrist radiographs by the Greulich and Pyle Atlas Method. Significant secular trend of earlier skeletal maturation was demonstrated with p less than or equal to 0.001. Such difference was contributed by improved socio-economic, nutritional and socio-hygienic conditions during the past decades.

Dental developmental status of southern Chinese girls in Hong Kong.

Dental developmental status of the permanent canines, premolars and second molars were studied in one hundred and two twelve-year-old Southern Chinese girls born and brought up in Hong Kong. Eruption of these teeth were defined as gingival emergence during the clinical examination while the root development was assessed from orthopantomographs. Root resorption pattern of the primary canines and molars were also studied with the aid of the orthopantomographs. Two-thirds of girls presented with permanent dentition stage. The root resorption patterns of the primary teeth were different from their order of exfoliation. The mandibular permanent teeth were in advanced in both eruption and root development than the corresponding maxillary teeth, except the first premolars.

Radiographic features of the bones of the hand and wrist in achondroplasia: report of case.

Achondroplasia is a well-established and documented medical condition. Most of the diagnostic features are discernible from a clinical examination, which are complemented by radiographic findings of the bones of the skeleton. The findings from the hand-and-wrist radiograph of an affected Southern Chinese male infant, age thirty-nine-months, are reported. The findings from this case indicated an infrequently reported abnormality in the development of the hand in achondroplasia.
