Radiology of nasopharyngeal carcinoma.

Plain film radiography and pluridirectional tomography have been displaced by CT and MRI for imaging NPC. The latter techniques are to some extent complementary, since MRI is particularly useful for defining soft-tissue components and CT accurately delineates bone erosion. CT, however, also provides good soft-tissue definition in conjunction with contrast enhancement. Nuclear isotope scanning is valuable in detecting bone metastases. These imaging techniques are of particular value in detecting submucosal tumors not visible clinically and are also essential to accurate tumor staging.

The radiological diagnosis and management of angiomylipoma of tuberous sclerosis.

Angiomyolipomas produce pathognomonic appearances on modern imaging methods and a tissue diagnosis is no longer required particularly when multiple tubers can be confidently diagnosed and if a CT brain scan shows periventricular calcifications. As the renal tumours are benign every effort must be made to preserve normal renal tissue. Symptomatic or large tumours can be effectively treated by transcatheter embolisation with a reduction in the size of the tumour and control of intratumoural haemorrhage.

Renal metastases shown by 99mTc-methylene diphosphonate scintigram which failed to detect vertebral metastases.

A patient with breast metastases is presented showing increased nodular renal uptake of tracer on bone scintigraphy that also demonstrated rib metastases and a large metastasis in the pelvis. However, vertebral body metastases were not shown when clearly demonstrated on CT with even partial compression on a thoracic spine film. Most of the renal lesions were hypoechoic on sonography, showed hypoattenuation areas on plain CT and after contrast enhancement but no calcification could be demonstrated. This case once again illustrates the value of scrutinizing the soft tissues on scintigraphy but also the possibility of showing some metastases on CT not visible on scintigraphy.

Trichinosis diagnosed by computed tomography.

Trichinosis is a worldwide disease contained by good husbandry and culinary practice, presenting unexpectedly in individual cases or mini-epidemics. The disease varies greatly in its manifestation and severity although when marked can be recognized by fever with myositis and periorbital oedema. Antibody tests are specific but the appearance on computed tomography of the brain are sufficiently characteristic to allow a confident diagnosis. Two cases where such appearances led to the diagnosis are reported.
