Planimetry has been used to analyse the tocographic tracings recorded from 29 deliveries induced by means of prostaglandin F 2 alpha as well as those recorded from 28 deliveries induced by means of oxytocin. The contraction-causing effect of prostaglandin was found to be milder than that of oxytocin. Prostaglandin F 2 alpha, consequently, proved to be superior to oxytocin in handling placental insufficiency.

Mothers who since 1970 gave birth to children with anencephaly or spina bifida in Hungary are informed about the recurrence risk, the possibility of prevention and about the four institutes where alpha-feto-protein determination is done. In one of these institutes the examination was recommended to 175 women of whom 158 availed themselves of the opportunity. The outcome of their pregnancy is now known in 131 cases. Of these, in 101 the examination was performed because of previous occurrence of anencephaly-spina bifida. High concentration (400, 200, 140 micrograms/ml) were found in 3 cases; they were due to anencephaly (selective induced abortion), severe spina bifida (liveborn) and macerated fetal death. The examination yielded values above the 99% confidence limit in the given gestational week in further 9 cases. The elevated values were due to twinning in 2 cases, to closed spina bifida in 1, and to fetal death in 1 case. The slightly elevated alpha-fetoprotein in 4 of them may have been due to chance.

Six human uterine tube were studied by scanning-and transmission electron microscopy. Ciliated epithelium and epithelium covered by microvilli could be identified by both method. In the area of the fimbriae the majority of cells appeared to be ciliated epithelium, but near to the uterus their number decreased. At every part of the uterine tube cells of the ciliated epithelium were situated deeper than cells covered by microvilli. In the age group studied (20-45 year) no age-dependent differences in the structure of the mucosa or in the number of the different cells could be revealed.
The relationship between birth weight, postnatal age and acidosis-induced urinary sodium excretion was studied in 43 one-week-old newborn infants with birth weights of 1000-4300 g and gestational age of 28-41 weeks; and in 13 premature infants with birth weights of 1000-1970 g (mean 1620 g) and gestational age of 29-35 weeks (mean, 31.4 weeks) during the first six weeks of life. Developmental changes were found in acidosis-induced urinary sodium excretion. Newborns with higher birth weight and postnatal age excreted significantly more sodium in response to acidosis than their lighter and younger matches. It is suggested that the degree of acidosis must be taken into account when estimating the sodium requirement of newborn infants different in birth weight and postnatal age.
The authors investigated the effectiveness of prostaglandin F2alpha administered by intravenous drop infusion to induce labour. They compared their results with those obtained in oxytocin-induced labour. They determined that prostaglandin F2alpha can without any danger be administered in the induction of labour. The process of labour and the ensuing results indicate that prostaglandin is less of a burden to the uteroplacental circulation. In administering either of the two drugs, the authors deem the principle of applying the "smallest" dose important.
In a home for mentally handicapped children indole positive variants of Shigella boydii 1 were isolated beside indole negative strains of the same serotype. The variants differed from the indole negative counterparts in fermenting dulcitol, raffinose, and in the absence of splitting trehalose. In antigenic structure the indole positive variant was identical with the type strain. The isolates gave positive guinea pig eye test.

A total of 8 doses, each containing 10(9) live or heated cells of pure phase I antigen of Shigella sonnei and Plesiomonas shigelloides, was administered into the conjunctival sac of guinea pigs during a 3-week period. The eyes were challenged with virulent S. sonnei. The vaccines protected the eyes in 50-80% to the minimum infecting dose andin 20-50% to 3 MID. The peak of immunity began to decrease after the 26th day and on the 56th day it was practically nil. Vaccination caused histological changes in the conjunctiva but not in the cornea.
