Caregiving enters a new era.
Twenty-five years after creation of the Medicare and Medicaid programs, the Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act of 1987 (OBRA) takes effect--with promises of increased quality care for nursing facility residents. In addition to expressing enthusiasm about the potential impact of new nursing facility regulations, some individuals voice concern about the effect of implementation glitches on the future.

Holistic health care began in antiquity, but it gradually faded from traditional medicine. The re-emergence of the whole-thinking paradigm has begun to revolutionize the health care system. New modes of nursing intervention, including therapeutic massage, therapeutic touch, imagery, and music, are now available for implementation by the postanesthesia nurse. In addition, nurses must recognize the need for self-care and healthful behavior patterns in their own lives. When nurses model wellness, they feel and function better, and they will be more able to meet the goal of high-quality care.

Separation of DNA binding from the transcription-activating function of a eukaryotic regulatory protein.
The yeast GAL4 protein (881 amino acids) binds to specific DNA sites upstream of target genes and activates transcription. Derivatives of this protein bearing as few as 74 amino terminal residues bind to these sites but fail to activate transcription. When appropriately positioned in front of a gene these derivatives act as repressors. These and related findings support the idea that GAL4 activates transcription by touching other DNA-bound proteins.
