Effects of chronic naltrexone on amphetamine locomotor activity.

Animals from two different populations of Wistar rats were chronically pretreated with naltrexone for 8 days. After a 2-day rest period, animals were tested with amphetamine for locomotor activity in the open-field with or without white noise (Day 2). The rats were similarly retested on Day 7 and Day 14. New colony animals showed a significant attenuation in amphetamine locomotor activity in the absence of noise only. In contrast, chronic naltrexone significantly decreased amphetamine activity in old colony animals only under noise conditions. The possibility of an inhibitory role opiate receptors on the dopamine neuro-transmission is discussed.

The effect of experimental tobacco smoke inhalation on in vitro alveolar macrophage bactericidal function.

The in vitro antibacterial activity of rat alveolar macrophages against a challenge of radiolabeled Staphylococcus epidermidis was studied following 30 and 60 consecutive days of in vivo tobacco smoke inhalation in a dose equivalent to approximately 1 1/2 packs of unfiltered cigarettes per day in man. Macrophages harvested by bronchopulmonary lavage, were cultured, infected, and assayed hourly for 3 hr to determine the relative percentage of surviving radiolabeled intracellular bacteria. Macrophages harvested from smoke-treated rats for 30 days had an impaired capacity to kill bacteria when compared to macrophages from control and sham-smoked animals (63.5% +/- 3.3, 80.8% +/- 3.8, and 86.2% %/- 1.2 killed in 3 hr, respectively). Alveolar macrophages harvested from rats exposed to cigarette smoke for 60 days, however, did not have an impairment in their bactericidal activity relative to matched controls (73.3% +/- 3.9 vs 69.8% +/- 6.9 killed in 3 hr). These data imply that doses of cigarette smoke commonly consumed by man impair the in vitro bactericidal function of the rat alveolar macrophages following 30 consecutive days of experimental smoke treatment. The disappearance of this effect after 60 days of exposure to tobacco smoke suggests that an adaptation to the initial impairment has developed.

Long-term results of treatment of patients with follicular lymphomas.

The management of patients with follicular lymphoma is controversial, particularly in those with follicular small cleaved cell (FSCC) or nodular poorly differentiated lymphoma (NPDL). Some advocate no treatment until symptoms arise, while others prefer to treat with intensive combination regimens and others with single agents. We reviewed the long-term effects of two types of combination chemotherapy on relapse-free survival and survival on 91 patients (88 were stages III-IV) who had received no previous chemotherapy. Those patients with FSCC lymphoma obtaining a complete remission had a significantly longer median survival than did those obtaining a partial remission (13 years versus 2 years). An adriamycin-containing regimen appeared to be the key factor in obtaining a complete remission in FSCC after taking into consideration prognostic factors. Not only was the complete response rate significantly higher for patients receiving adriamycin, but so too was the median survival and relapse-free survival. BCG immunotherapy appeared to be important in preventing relapse in some of the complete responders with NPDL who received adriamycin.

Characterisation of reference materials for radioactivity with assigned values traceable to the SI units.

The Institute for Reference Materials and Measurements participates in an IAEA co-ordinated project to upgrade Analytical Quality Control Services intercomparison materials to reference materials. The principal objective is to ensure that assigned property values are traceable to the International System of Units. General principles and practical mechanisms for achieving this traceability are described.

Aspects of sample preparation for the determination of actinoids in soil.

In the frame of the re-certification measurements of the IAEA-375 soil reference material the activity concentration of four actinoids (U, Th, Pu and Am) was determined. The method is based on microwave digestion or aqua regia leaching, separation by extraction chromatography and alpha-particle counting source preparation by co-precipitation or electro-deposition. This article describes some of the problems encountered during the validation of the sample preparation method and their solutions.

Determination of thorium in environmental and workplace materials by ICP-MS.

The paper outlines the advantages of the use of Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS) over radiometric techniques to measure natural thorium, 232Th. Experimental parameters that must be taken into account in the sample digestion, preparation and ICP-MS analysis of environmental (soils, rocks, sediments) or workplace (thorium oxide, reference solutions) materials are described. The methods presented are applied to various reference materials, with the aim of providing suitable procedures to be useful for other important thorium containing materials (such as monazite sands or welding electrodes). The participation in a European Commission intercomparison exercise is detailed and a comparison with alpha spectrometry is made.

Flexible sigmoidoscopy by nurses: state of the art 1999.

Although screening flexible sigmoidoscopy is associated with a significant decrease in colorectal cancer mortality, less than 50% of eligible Americans have had a sigmoidoscopy. As the United States population ages, over 50 million Americans will be eligible for colorectal cancer screening with flexible sigmoidoscopy. The projected increase in a population eligible for screening is expected to increase demand for this procedure and may result in overwhelming currently available endoscopic resources. Gastroenterology nurses should actively seek training to perform flexible sigmoidoscopy to accommodate this increased demand. Current barriers to nurse-performed sigmoidoscopy are prohibitions by state Boards of Nursing and lack of procedural reimbursement for nurse endoscopists performing flexible sigmoidoscopy. The lack of research about the effectiveness of this practice is a contributing factor to the hindrances in the development of this nursing role. This review outlines research about the effectiveness of flexible sigmoidoscopy by nurses, legal and reimbursement issues, and details the scope of training programs used by institutions with nurse endoscopists.

Accredited clinical coder examination 1996 results.

In September 1996, 148 candidates sat for the first Australian Clinical Coder (ACC) accreditation examination at 19 sites across Australia and New Zealand. This event was an important milestone for clinical coders in Australia. Around one third of the candidates who sat for the exam gained accreditation. The results show that the candidates who were most likely to be successful in gaining accreditation: worked in public hospitals (of any size) or private hospitals with more than 150 beds spent 25 hours or more each week on coding or coding-related activities had been coding for three or more years. The greatest percentage of successful candidates had been coding for 10 or more years.
