The response of the mouse R-E system to infection with Toxoplasma gondii.

Groups of mice were inoculated with strains of Toxoplasma gondii of either high or low virulence strains. The response of the lymph nodes, speen and thymus was studied histologically and antibodies were assessed by the dye-test technique. The low-virulence strain induced changes in all three organs indicative of an immunological response, both in respect of cellular and humoral immunity. The high-virulence strain produced rapid lymphoid depletion in lymph nodes, spleen and thymus with areas of necrosis. It is suggested that the high-virulence strain has a toxic effect on the Reticulo-Endothelial system allowing urestricted proliferation of the organism with eventual death.

Age and sex differences in the response of lymph node post-capillary venules in mice infected with Toxoplasma gondii.

Groups of male and female mice of varying ages were infected with a low-virulence strain of Toxoplasma gondii and killed 3 weeks and 6 weeks after infection. The lymph nodes of the female group showed a greater prominence of the endothelial cells of the post-capillary venules. This difference was most marked at the age of 15 weeks and least at 30 or more weeks. The same sex difference was demonstrated in control mice although to a lesser extent. The possible role is discussed of the effect of female sex hormones on vascular endothelium in modifying the development of an immune response and in explaining the observed female preponderance in human cases of auto-immune disease.

Idiopathic chronic urinary retention in the female.

The clinical features in 14 female patients with chronic urinary retention unassociated with extrinsic or obvious intrinsic obstruction or neurological disease are described. Management, results and histological findings are presented and discussed in relation to the clinical findings.

Histological findings in pseudomembranous trigonitis.

Pseudomembranous trigonitis presents in females with the urethral syndrome and a characteristic lesion restricted to the trigone of the bladder. The histology shows ;vaginal metaplasia' of the epithelium together with underlying oedema and vascular dilatation, but no significant inflammation. Thirty-one such cases are included in the study. The possible role of oestrogen stimulation is discussed, together with a suggestion that the trigone has an embryological derivation distinct from the remainder of the bladder, allowing the trigonal epithelium to respond to oestrogenic stimulation in a manner denied to the vesical transitional epithelium.
