A servant's heart: an analysis of Nightingale's correspondence to Mrs Broomhead.

During a visit to the Nightingale home at Lea Hurst, the authors discovered correspondence between Florence Nightingale and a former servant's wife. Much of her correspondence that has been studied was to well-known people regarding major issues of public concern. This correspondence reveals Nightingale's concern for people of all stations in life. Nightingale's caring concern and strong religious faith are evident in each letter. These letters provide evidence of Nightingale's lifelong commitment to the people of her youth, regardless of their status in life.

Standards of practice by Nightingale.

Although the American Holistic Nurses' Association (AHNA) has a relatively short history, the ideas and concepts it embodies are similar to those of Florence Nightingale. This article describes those similarities in Nightingales's writings and in the AHNA's philosophy and standards of practice.

Planning for study abroad.

There is more to planning for study abroad than buying airplane tickets. Providing a successful course away from the host institution requires a great deal of planning by the educator. This planning includes course development, budget, marketing, travel, housing, food, and entertainment. Careful preparation provides both the educator and student a unique and enriching experience that goes beyond the traditional course.

Helping staff help students.

Nurses in a variety of health care settings work with nursing students. Staff development educators can help the nurses create a successful student affiliation while protecting the agency and patients. By teaching staff what to ask and what to tell, educators help students learn without compromising care. Positive student experiences also may help recruit new graduates to the agency. Teaching the staff to share information will help staff help students.
