[Analysis of postoperative use of opiates and its relation to personal assessment (author's transl)].

The study of pain by analysis of the postoperative consumption of opiates shows a significant influence of the operation and the personal factor N. High N-scores and long operations lead to a significant increase of the postoperative consumption of opiates. Fixed combinations for opiate medication are as useless as a time-fixed method for the giving of these drugs. The individual preparation and medication should always be preferred.

[A neurometric analysis of brain functions after halothane anaesthesia, neuroleptanalgesia and combined acupuncture-analgesia (author's transl)].

In a comparative examination of the effects on brain function of three anaesthetic methods--halothane anaesthesia, neuroleptanalgesia and combined acupuncture-analgesia--typical and characteristic changes in brain metabolism, brain electrical activity or psychological test parameters were observed with each method. Brain function is understood here as complex of consciousness and pain. Loss of consciousness is defined as the suspension of intelligence quotient with characteristic changes of brain activity and metabolism. Pain is defined as the central perception of senses evoked by peripheral sensors. Loss of consciousness is only the evident and monotone finishing result of different effects of the anaesthetic methods on brain function. In using combined acupuncture analgesia a hypalgetic method is introduced to the anaesthetists armamentarium. Possible mode of action are discussed. In place of the name acupuncture-analgesia ther term electrohypalgesia is recommended.

[Enlarge indications for controlled respiration (author's transl)].

Controlled respiration should have a place not only in cases of hypoventilation but also in the treatment of comatose and hyperventilating persons. Hyperventilation is liable severely to interfere with the blood supply to the brain, and this disturbance, in conjunction with the primary disease responsible for the comatose condition, such as hyperglycaemia, diabetes or cerebral trauma, may be a contributing factor to the lethal outcome. Controlled respiration helps towards regulation of the cerebral circulation and of the acid-base balance and provides improved conditions for normalization of the disturbed metabolism and thus greatly improves the prognosis of these cases.

[Combined acupuncture-analgesia as a method in general anesthesia (author's transl)].

The clinical results of 162 operations performed with combined-acupuncture-analgesia are reported. The experiences so collected are satisfying. This method seems suitable for anaesthetic practice. Total absence of toxity good analgesia and the negligible circulatory reactions give this method advantages in the anesthetic treatment of old and poor risk patients. A heavy disadvantage is that the method in time consuming is expensive in personnel.
