Bacterial colonization of infants raised in incubators and under radiant heaters.

To assess the effect of open radiant heaters on bacterial colonization of neonates, 24 infants were raised under radiant heaters and 34 in standard incubators. Cultures of the nose, groin, and umbilicus were taken daily for the first 3 days of life. For infants raised in incubators, colonization rates with Staph. aureus ranged up to 47%. Among infants raised under radiant heaters (8 of whom had topical antibiotics applied to the umbilicus), only one was colonized with this organism. Even if the 8 treated infants were excluded, the prevalence of Staph. aureus was significantly greater at the umbilicus and groin in infants raised in incubators.

Autosomal dominant osteosclerosis.

Autosomal dominant osteosclerosis, an entity previously labelled by various names, is clearly separate from Van Buchem disease; Van Buchem disease exhibits autosomal recessive inheritance. The clinical manifestation of autosomal dominant osteosclerosis is a widened and deepened mandible with increased gonial angle. Radiographic manifestations include endosteal sclerosis of the neurocranium with loss of the diploë, osteosclerosis and hyperostosis of the mandible with absence of the normal antegonial notches, endosteal sclerosis of the diaphyses of long bones (including metacarpals and metatarsals), and osteosclerosis of the pelvis.

Speech and lingual behavior before and after mandibular osteotomy.

A procedure was applied to compare the oral behavior of five patients before and after mandibular osteotomy for correction of Class III malocclusions. It was found that observable changes in oral behavior do occur after mandibular osteotomy. Fewer errors were found in sibilant articulation, while more maladaptive lingual behaviors were found in lingual diadochokinetic tasks. Changes were also found in swallowing behaviors. Performance tasks of speech, diadochokinetics, and swallowing were recorded on audio-videotape.

Effect of amniotic fluid on bacterial growth.

The bacteriostatic effect of amniotic fluid was studied using four pathogenic organisms which are encountered in the perinatal period, E. coli, S. aureus, L. monocytogenes, and Group B beta hemolytic streptococci. Amniotic fluid inhibited the growth of all four organisms, with a wide degree of individual variation among specimens. The greatest degree of inhibition was noted for L. monocytogenes and the least for E. coli. The time in gestation in which the amniotic fluid sample was obtained did not appear to be related to its bacteriostatic capacity. The ability of amniotic fluid to inhibit the growth of certain pathogenic organisms may be significant in prevention of perinatal infection.

Dialysis and transplantation: a mothers' group.

Two social workers are helping mothers of transplant and dialysis patients to deal with the multiple reality and feeling problems posed by the unique situations encountered in the parenting of children with end-stage renal disease. The commonality of these problems indicated a group approach. The mothers' natural grouping was formalized into an effective supportive, educational, and helping experience.

A topological theorem for nonlinear dynamics in chemical and ecological networks.

A topological theorem is given which places restrictions on the numbers and types of critical points in nonlinear chemical and ecological systems, provided certain stringent conditions on the flows on the boundary of the concentration space are satisfied. The sets of critical points that are found for stable and unstable oscillations, and for competitive exclusion, represent the simplest sets of critical points that satisfy the topological theorem. The restrictions that are imposed on bifurcations of the dynamics are discussed.

Effect of thermal environment and caloric intake on head growth of low birthweight infants during late neonatal period.

In order to assess the effects of ambient thermal conditions on postnatal head growth in low birth weight infants, 42 asymtomatic neonates were reared under 4 combinations of caloric intake and thermal environment after the first week of life. Exposure to a subthermoneutral temperature (abdominal skin temperature of 35 degrees C), together with a relatively low caloric intake (120 cal/kg per day), was associated with significant retardation of head growth over a 2-week study period.

Alpha1-antitrypsin concentration in amniotic fluid.

Concentrations of alpha1-antitrypsin were measured in 80 specimens of amniotic fluid collected at various stages of pregnancy. Levels remained relatively unchanged throughout gestation, with a median concentration of 10.0 mg/100 ml at 12-24 weeks, 18.7 mg/100 ml at 34-37 weeks, and 16.2 mg/100 ml, after the 37th week. In three instances where the infant developed RDS, the median concentration was 12.4 mg/100 ml.
