Pathology of metastasizing tumors in nitrosomethyl urea-induced rat mammary carcinoma.

The metastatic capacity of rat mammary tumors induced with N-nitrosomethyl urea was tested in BUF/N inbred female rats by successive transplantation. After the first and second passage, tumor cells appeared diffusely distributed throughout the bone marrow and spleen, confirming results reported by others; no other metastases were observed. After six successive transplantations, large, well-defined tumor nodules were observed in the liver, spleen, lung, and the peritoneal surface of the intestines in 40% of the injected animals. The morphology of the primary and metastatic tumors was compared by light microscopy. The tumors appeared to be adenocarcinomas with differing degrees of differentiation. No morphological differences could be observed between the primary and the metastatic tumors.

Benign lipoblastoma: report of a case.

Light and electron microscopic studies of a benign, well circumscribed lipoblastoma in a 10-year-old boy were performed. Ultrastructural examination demonstrated lipocytes, lipoblasts, undifferentiated mesenchymal cells, and occasional hibernoma cell types. Myxoid liposarcoma as a differential diagnosis was considered. However, an absence of mitosis and the hyperchromatic and bizarre nuclei of the lipoblasts ruled out the possiblity of malignancy.

Ultrastructural study of myoepithelial cells in breast carcinoma.

This investigation was designed to study the myoepithelium of the human mammary carcinoma. Tissues were obtained from 30 infiltrating ductal carcinomas. Under light microscope, there were no significant changes noted in the myoepithelium. Glutaraldehyde-fixed tissues were examined under electon microscope. In infiltrating carcinoma the myoepithelial cells contained increased endoplasmic reticulum, abundant microfilaments, secretory granules and intracytoplasmic duct formation. This observation suggests that myoepithelium takes an important and active role in the infiltrating stage of the human mammary carcinoma.

Ultrastructural study of stroma in human mammary carcinoma.

This investigation was designed to study the origin of the stromal component of human mammary carcinoma. Tissues from 30 proved breast carcinomas were studied. Under a light microscope with special stains, an increased connective tissue component was seen in carcinoma. Gluteraldehyde-fixed tissue was examined under an electron microscope. The stroma appeared to be composed of fibroblastic, myofibroblastic, histiocytic and primitive mesenchymal cells. Elastic fibers were intimately intermingled with collagen and reticulin and seen in close association with carcinoma cells. In some areas they were seen inside the carcinoma cells with discontinuous cytoplasmic membrane, as if they were formed by the cancer cells. This observation suggests that breast carcinoma cells play an important role in the production of elastic fibers in association with stromal cells and also stimulate the proliferation of the stromal cellular component.

Ultrastructural localization of lactic dehydrogenase in mouse mammary carcinoma cells.

Electron microscopic study of lactic dehydrogenase (LDH) was carried out in C3H mouse mammary carcinoma cells. Scattered cytoplasmic LDH granules were noted as well as around mitochondria and nuclear membrane. Control studies with normal breast tissues failed to show any activity. This observation suggests that LDH plays an important role in C3H mammary carcinoma and may be of use as an additional marker.

Subchondral cyst of bone: a case report.

This is a report of a subchondral cyst of the entire fibular head in a 24-year-old woman, and a survey of the literature including pathogenesis, histopathology, and management. Subchondral bone cyst in this location seems not to have been reported previously. The treatment was excision of the head of the fibula.

Immunocytological localization of estrogen in human mammary carcinoma cells by horseradish--anti-horseradish peroxidase complex.

Tissues from 25 female and 2 male patients of mammary carcinoma were examined by the horseradish--anti-horseradish peroxidase complex to localize the presence of estrogen. Carcinoma cells of 10 females and 2 male patients showed positive staining by this technique. The nucleus and cytoplasmic membrane showed the reaction. This method is useful in identifying the exact location of the hormones or hormone-like substances in the malignant cells and, perhaps, will be of great help in selecting the patients for management.

Intracellular demonstration of growth hormone in human mammary carcinoma cells.

Intracellular growth hormone has been demonstrated in human mammary carcinoma cells by using an unlabeled antibody enzyme technic with horseradish peroxidase and antihorseradish peroxidase complex. Intense reaction was seen in both male and female mammary carcinoma cells. Positive staining was observed in nuclei and cytoplasm and on cytoplasmic membranes.

Histochemical and ultrastructural study of lactic dehydrogenase in chemically induced lung cancer.

Light and electron microscopy studies of lactic dehydrogenase activity were carried out in embryonic, neonatal, and adult mouse lungs and in lungs undergoing chemically induced carcinogenesis. Embryonic mouse lungs were collected on the 6th, 12th, and 18th days of gestation; 1-day-old lungs were used for the neonatal model. These were compared with adult normal mouse lung and lungs of the animals treated with 4-nitroquinoline 1-oxide at a monthly interval until cancer developed. Enzymatic activity was seen in the embryonic, precancerous, and malignant lung tissues and was found diffusely in the cytoplasm of the epithelial cells.

The pancreatic islets in chondrosarcoma. A qualitative and quantitative study in humans.

Pancreatic islets in 12 control and 15 chondrosarcoma cases have been studied both qualitatively and quantitatively. There was definite hypertrophy and hyperplasia of islets in the chondrosarcoma patients. The mean percent of large islets was 15% for the control group and 41% for chondrosarcoma patients. The latter had a greater number of cells per islet and a greater number of alpha cells as well as beta cells than the control series; this result might of course be merely a reflection of the increased islet tissue mass in chondrosarcoma patients.

Thyroglossal duct carcinomas: light and electron microscopic studies.

Two cases of papillary carcinoma arising in thyroglossal duct cysts are reported. Electron microscopic studies were done on both cases and similar ultrastructural features were noted. When compared with a case of papillary adenocarcinoma arising in the thyroid gland proper, no difference was seen both at the light microscopic and ultrastructural levels.
