An experimental study on 30 hemimandibles in which sagittal osteotomy of the ramus was performed, after cleansing of the mandibular canal and filling it with wax, shows how inferior alveolar nerve lesions can occur. The use of a fine spatula is advocated for the splitting, in order to reduce the number of nerve lesions.
197 Hg Cl2 (mercuric dichloride) was used in the diagnosis of 30 cases of epidermoid carcinoma of the head and the neck, and in 5 cases of benign tumours and non-neoplastic lesions. The results show that radioisotope scanning is not a certain method of diagnosis but that it affords supplementary information essential to correct therapy.

The Authors carried out a clinical and statistical study of the frequency of malignant and benign neoplasms, inflammatory processes and pre-cancerous states in the mouth over the period from 1961 to 1970, comparing their findings with those provided by a previous investigation covering a similar period of time. Benign tumours appear to be more frequent than malignant ones, and the latter are found most frequently in males in their fifties. The most frequent site of malignant tumours is the lower lip, and histologically they are mainly found to be epithelial.

The authors used Bleomycin Co57 in diagnosing melanoma and their metastases in 15 carriers of such neoplasms and also in 7 carriers of benign lesions who were chosen as controls. On the basis of the results obtained, the authors assert that x-ray tests using Bleomycin Co57 do not guarantee certain clinical diagnosis of melanoma. However, it can serve as useful corollary of information which is indispensable to any correct and radical therapeutic treatment.
