Comparative in vitro encrustation studies of biomaterials in human urine.

A new dynamic in vitro human urine model was developed to compare biomaterial encrustation. The model incorporates a capacity to study seven biomaterials, a daily urine inflow of 500 ml, a reservoir capacity of 700 ml, and a turnover rate of four days. Encrustation studies performed for 2 weeks in sterile and infected (Proteus Vulgaris) urine on segmented polyether polyurethane, polyester polyurethane, silicone (Mitsui), silicone (Dow Corning), biothane, biolor 1 and biolor 11 demonstrated that biolor 11 (silicone-carbon composite) caused the least encrustation. Encrustation analysis showed brushite in the sterile model and struvite and ammonium acid urate in the infected mode I. Biolor II should have beneficial applications in catheters, stents and prosthetics which come in contact with urine.

Renal transplant dysfunction due to severe aorto-iliac atherosclerosis in the presence of patent renal transplant artery.

We report a case of progressive deterioration in renal function and decreased renal graft perfusion induced by extensive aorto-iliac atherosclerotic lesions proximal to a patent renal graft artery. Significant improvement in kidney graft function followed left axillo-femoral bypass graft surgery, which to the best of our knowledge, has never been performed previously for permanent maintenance of renal transplant perfusion.

[Home-making responsibilities and health of working women].

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the relationship between the distribution of home-making responsibilities and perceived mental and physical health in working women. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted between September 1994 and October 1995, in Caracas, Venezuela. A total of 260 university teachers were surveyed on home-making management and activities. Statistical analysis consisted of central tendency measures, analysis of variance and hierarchical multiple regression. RESULTS: Considering the distribution of home-making responsibilities, it was found that women participated more in home-making management and planning and that they received support from their partner in those tasks related to home-making. Those women who perceived higher overload in home-tasks reported also higher levels of anxiety, depression and a lower self-esteem. CONCLUSIONS: These results indicate the negative effects of household labor on mental health in working women.

Comparison of Delphin and BioMedicus pumps.

There is an increasing use of centrifugal pump systems for cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) and circulatory assistance. The BioMedicus and Delphin centrifugal pump systems were tested in two side-by-side, identical in vitro flow loops for blood trauma and flow probe accuracy. Blood parameters tested were hemoglobin, hematocrit, lactate dehydrogenase, free plasma hemoglobin, and platelet counts. The Delphin pump demonstrated significant increases in plasma hemoglobin levels at the three flow rates tested: 2 L/min (p less than 0.05), 4 L/min (p less than 0.005), and 6 L/min (p less than 0.05). After 4 hr of pumping, the drop in platelet counts was significantly greater in the BioMedicus loop as compared with the Delphin loop (p less than 0.05) at the 2 L/min and 4 L/min flow rates; however, platelet levels remained within normal ranges in both systems. At 6 L/min, no statistical difference in platelet counts was noted. The flow probe readings were found to deviate by as much as 58% of stopwatch timed flow rate comparisons at low flow rates, but improved to within 10% or better at 6 L/min.

[The type-A behavior pattern and cardiovascular reactivity in executive managers].

With the purpose of studying the relationship between type A behaviour pattern (TABP) and cardiovascular reactivity in the natural work environment, the presence of type A, heart rate (HR) and systolic and diastolic blood pressure (SBP, DBP) during two cognitive tasks were evaluated in a group of business managers (46 men and six women) of a large organization. Habits associated with cardiovascular risk (sedentarism, smoking, alcohol consumption and obesity) as well as other biological risk factors (familiar and personal history of cardiovascular problems, cholesterol and triglyceride level) were also assessed. On results showed that when solving cognitive tasks--abstract reasoning (AR) and mental arithmetic (MA)--within the work environment, these stimuli produced a significant reactivity in heart rate, SBP and DBP and also in a subjective measure of stress. The majority of participants reached peak values of HR and SBP during the MA task, whereas DBP was mostly activated during the AR task. SBP was significantly higher at the beginning of the experimental session than during the resting periods or between tasks, and HR at the beginning of the session, was associated with the level of performance. Type A's and B's differed in their SBP taken just before leaving the session. These results indicate the importance of taking into account, aside from the resting measures, the entering and leaving periods of an experimental session. A very high proportion of the subjects studied were classified on type A behaviour (85%). Sedentarism, alcohol consumption and family history were also more frequent in this group. A very high proportion of participants had more than two biological risk factors or habits associated with cardiovascular risk. A's and B's were significantly different in personal history and hypertension, being A's at higher risk. The reduced number of type B's in this group did not allow further conclusions.
