Are ADDH and ADHD the same or different?

To assess the relationship between the DSM-III criteria for attention deficit disorder with hyperactivity (ADDH) and the DSM-III-R criteria for attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), children from an inner city parochial school were evaluated using a 30-item teacher questionnaire consisting of the DMS-III and DSM-III-R criteria for these disorders, the revised Conners Parent and Teacher Questionnaires, and a continuous performance test. Diagnostic groups were established based on teacher ratings of the DSM items and evaluated in relation to the rating scale data and continuous performance test. While children who were identified by teachers as having ADDH almost always satisfied the criteria for ADHD, a new group of children who were hyperactive and impulsive but less clearly inattentive also met the criteria for ADHD. Implications of the change in diagnostic criteria are discussed.

Hormonal mediation of rat heart lipoprotein lipase activity after fat feeding.

The effect of acute fat feeding on the response of two fractions of lipoprotein lipase in heart was explored. In rats, previously fasted, lipoprotein lipase activity released into the perfusate by heparin increased approximately 50% 4 h after fat feeding. The lipase activity remaining in the heart tissue after heparin perfusion showed no significant difference. When rats maintained ad libitum were intubated with glucose 2 h before the fat dose, a relatively larger increase (5-10-fold) in the heparin-releasable lipase activity was observed. The capacity of these hearts to hydrolyze 14C-labeled chylomicrons was also increased 4-5-fold over the controls. Fat ingestion has been reported to elevated plasma corticosteroid levels in rats. When adrenalectomized rats were fed fat, no significant changes in the heparin-releasable lipase activity were observed Hydrocortisone and corticotropin treatment increased the heparin-releasable lipase activity to the same degree as observed with fat feeding. These data suggest that the increase in heart lipoprotein lipase activity following fat feeding is mediated via corticosteroids.

Breast reconstruction after mastectomy.

The mastectomy patient presenting to the plastic surgeon often relates a profound sense of deformity. The current state of the art in breast reconstruction allows the plastic surgeon to intelligently address this deformity with procedures capable of achieving pleasing aesthetic results. If adequate soft tissue is present, implantation in the submuscular plane has proved satisfactory. However, if soft tissue deficiencies exist, highly acceptable results have been consistently achieved using the latissimus dorsi myocutaneous flap.
