In order to define immediate criteria of prognosis for patients with cirrhosis, hospitalized in emergency for upper gastrointestinal tract haemorrhage, 164 cases of haemorrhages medically treated were reviewed. A prognostic study of each variant points to the clinical, endoscopic and biological data connected with death. That study illustrates the prognostic value of traditional data. Patients who died within the first 30 days had a significantly higher incidence of hepatic encephalopathy, hematemesis, ascites, low blood pressure, bleeding oesophageal varices during endoscopy, hypoprothrombinemia, hyperbilirubinemia. Those who survived had a significantly higher incidence of aspirin intake, numerous haemorrhages, good state of health, non bleeding peptic ulcer. Several series of multivariant analysis: multiple regression and linear discrimination, differing from one another in variates were done. They have allowed identification of 11 variables used in establishing a prognostic index. In the series studied, it gives an 87% probability of correct differentiation. Such an index allows an objective estimate of the value and limits of a group of patients in which the efficiency of other treatments could be tested in controlled trials.

The plasma dopamine-beta-hydroxylase activity was measured in 10 healthy untrained volunteers during a graded physical exercise on a bicycle ergometer. The authors have shown a good correlation between the DbetaH activity and the noradrenaline content in plasma. It can therefore be concluded that the DbetaH activity could be a true measure of the sympathetic activity.
Patient follow up, within the framework of epidemiological studies, poses the problem of linking nominal files. An encryption method of identity is proposed to allow the linkage of medical information on the same patient while respecting the confidentiality of medical data. In contrast with most encryption algorithms, the proposed method is mathematically irreversible in response to the requirement of the French National Commission of Computerized Information Security which demands that the cryptosystem must not be decipherable even by the legitimate recipient. In order to prevent deciphering by frequency analysis, the proposed method introduces polynomial operations so that neither indication concerning the length of the string nor a possible repetition of characters can be obtained by code disclosure. The security of the system is reinforced by the use of two keys, the first one to be defined by the producers of information and the second one by the recipient so that nobody can decrypt the enciphered text.

About two fibroid inflammatory polyps of the stomach and 84 similar cases previously reported in the world literature the authors describe the anatomo-clinical features of this entity. The two sexes are equally affected by such a lesion which occurs with a maximum of frequency during the 6th and the 7th decades. More often an epigastralgia with or without anemia is the main symptom of this polyp which is located in the antral submucosa (95% of the cases). A sessile or pedunculated mass is discovered by gastric endoscopy and may be resected during this investigation. Histologic examination shows a well limited fibroblastic proliferation around vessels and an inflammatory infiltration with a variable density of eosinophilic polynuclear cells. The presence of these elements is not a proof for the allergic nature of the polyp: blood eosinophilia is absent or rare and the serum IgE level is not changed.
