We describe a case of primary ovarian leiomyoma in a 16 year old patient; both ovaries were affected. Since at intervention normal tissue was found, the left ovary was preserved and a 30-months follow-up was carried out. Tumour markers (CA-125; alpha-fetoprotein; CEA and beta-HCG) were tested. Such a case has not previously been reported. Etiopathogenesis is also discussed.
We evaluate the 3-year result of 145 oral leukoplakias operated on by outpatient carbon dioxide laser surgery at the Istituto Nazionale Tumori, Milan, Italy. The surgical technique that was used consisted of excision in 140 patients and vaporization in 5 patients. Cancer was found in 14 out of 140 patients who underwent excision (10%). In the analysis of the disease-free survival rate and of the unfavorable pattern of events, only 131 patients with benign postoperative histologic diagnosis were considered. Fifty-eight patients developed unfavorable events. The probabilities of remaining free of disease or of developing local relapses or new lesions at 3-year survival was 0.57, 0.27, and 0.19, respectively. Two patients had oral carcinomas after the operation. Forty patients modified their alcohol or tobacco habits or their teeth and/or prosthesis. Moreover, only two patients modified these factors before the unfavorable events occurred.
Many clinicians recognize a need for direct intervention with cases of early stuttering. However, this recognition is not supported by adequate empirical information about how such cases should be managed. One possibility is that early stuttering might be controllable by parent-administered, operant, verbal stimulation procedures. The purpose of this paper is to present preliminary data that depict the results of such an intervention procedure with four cases of early stuttering. Speech measures were gathered in a variety of speaking situations, within and beyond the clinic, over a 2-month pretreatment period and a 9-month posttreatment period. Results showed that the 4 subjects achieved reductions in stuttering comparable to those reported for adult treatment programs. However, the present results were obtained in far fewer clinical hours than normally needed in the treatment for older subjects. The treatment times in the present study also compare favorably to those published in other reports of operant intervention procedures with children. These findings suggest that cases of early stuttering might be managed effectively by parents, with limited expenditure of clinical time. Findings are discussed in terms of their implications for the development of early intervention programs that are more efficient and effective than existing intervention procedures for older clients.

Previous studies reported that norepinephrine (NE) induces contraction of the calf isolated coronary arteries after beta-adrenergic blockade with propranolol (PR), and that the effect disappeared after phentolamine. An higher Ca++ concentration increased the response of preparation to NE, whereas the reduction of the concentration reduced the response. In isolated coronary arteries the baseline tone and contractile response to NE after PR were studied as influenced by DA and nicardipine (NI). NI always induced vessel relaxation and DA induced a contraction followed by relaxation. The NE contraction was not abolished in calcium-free medium but in presence of DA and was reduced by NI in the medium containing Ca++. We conclude that NE induces contractions by facilitating the influx of the extracellular Ca++ and by promoting the liberation of intracellular bound Ca++.
The authors report a case of early and marked osteoporotic syndrome in a patient affected with adenosine-deaminase deficiency (ADA) of the heterozygotic type. The negative results obtained in all the tests carried out to ascertain any dysmetabolic, nutritional or iatrogenic disease, and the literature reporting homozygotic patients with osteometabolic and skeletal changes similar to those observed in this particular patient, led the authors to suggest a possible pathogenetic role in ADA deficiency. They conclude by describing the mechanisms by which this enzymatic defect could determine the clinical picture, and by presenting a possible type of treatment.
The authors describe embryology and anatomy of synovial plica of the knee joint. They propose a clinic and pathogenic classification and after examining the diagnostic problem of plica syndrome, analyze their long-term results after surgical treatment.
