Colloid osmotic pressure in newborn infants: variations with birth weight, gestational age, total serum solids, and mean arterial pressure.

Colloid osmotic pressure (COP) of blood was measured directly at birth with the Wescor membrane colloid osmometer (model 4100) in 91 appropriately grown, 11 large, and nine small for gestational age "well" newborn infants. COP correlated directly with birth weight (r = .726, P less than .00001) and gestational age (r = .753, P less than .00001). COP values for small for gestational age (SGA) and large for gestational age (LGA) infants were found to fall within the 95% prediction interval with regard to birth weight and gestational age for appropriate for gestational age (AGA) infants. Simultaneous measurements of COP, total serum solids, and central arterial mean blood pressure were made. The results showed that COP correlated directly with total serum solids (r = .89, P less than .0001) and mean arterial blood pressure (r = .660, P less than .001). Among the factors evaluated, total serum solids was the best predictor of COP.

Amino acid sequence of the signal peptide of apoVLDL-II, a major apoprotein in avian very low density lipoproteins.

ApoVLDL-II is a major apoprotein in avian very low density lipoproteins (Jackson, R. L., Lin, H.-Y., Chan, L., and Means, A.R. (1977) J. Biol. Chem. 252, 250-253). Partially purified apoVLDL-II mRNA was translated in vitro in a wheat germ system in the presence of various labeled amino acids. The product, designated preapoVLDL-II, was purified by immunoprecipitation and sodium dodecyl sulfate acrylamide gel electrophoresis. It was subjected to automated Edman degradation in a Beckman Sequencer. The signal peptide was found to be a 23-amino acid NH2-terminal extension of the mature protein with the following sequence: Met-Gln-Tyr-Arg-Ala-Leu-Val-Ile-Ala-Val-Ile-Leu-Leu-Leu-Ser-Thr-Val-Pro-Glu-Val-Cys-Ser-Lys where Lys is the NH2-terminal residue of mature apoVLDL-II. The abundance and distribution of the hydrophobic amino acid residues are very similar to those of other signal sequences and the average hydrophobicity for the 23 residues is -1227 cal/mol/residue. However, translocation of preapoVLDL-II would represent a unique case of vectorial migration of a protein through a membrane since apoVLDL-II is itself an apolipoprotein and binds lipid spontaneously.

Localization of metabolites in animals using 31P topical magnetic resonance.

High-resolution phosphorous (31P)-NMR spectra of biological molecules provide detailed information about the metabolism of living systems. Although the NMR method is non-destructive, all studies so far, with two exceptions, have been carried out on excised, perfused organs and tissues or have required some form of surgery for in situ measurements. The use of 'surface' radiofrequency coils does not require surgery, but is best suited for tissues close to the surface of the animals. We describe here 'topical magnetic resonance'--a new, non-surgical method for acquiring 31P-NMR spectra from a selected, localized place deep within an animal by modifying the main magnetic field, B0, using only static-field gradients. The method is conceptually similar to one spin-imaging method but primarily provides biochemical rather than spatial information. This new technique can be used in fundamental investigations into living systems, clinical diagnosis and the estimation of the efficacy of drug therapy.

Effects of estrogen on specific protein synthesis in the cockerel liver: an immunocytochemical study on major apoproteins in very low density and high density lipoproteins and albumin.

The effects of estrogen on two major apolipoproteins, apoVLDL-II and apoA-I, and albumin synthesis have been studied morphologically in cockerels using immunocytochemical methods. After the administration of a single dose of diethylstilbesterol (5 mg), the number of apoVLDL-II-containing hepatocytes increased markedly. The reaction product was also detected in the sinusoids. In contrast, the number of apoA-1- and albumin-containing cells did not seem to change significantly after estrogen treatment. The number of albumin-containing hepatocytes was higher than the number of apoVLDL II- or apoA-I-containing cells in the basal state. After estrogen, apoVLDL-II-containing cells were much more abundant than the other two cell types. The morphological changes induced by estrogen are correlated well with changes in the concentration of the three proteins in plasma after estrogen treatment.

Medical parasitology in China: an historical perspective.

Traditional Chinese anthelmintics prove to be interesting because social, political, cultural, psychological and philosophical factors could affect them. A review of the ideas on the origin of parasitic infection and the historical development of medical parasitology in China is attempted to aid in the elucidation of the rationale of traditional Chinese anthelminthic treatment.
