Two cases of pontine ischaemia located in the distribution area of the perforating paramedian branches are reported. In both cases the lesion was documented by nuclear magnetic resonance whereas the CAT scan was normal in both patients. Clinical symptoms correlated well with the site and extent of the lesion documented by MR.
Thirty patients subjected to posterior fossa surgery in the sitting position were evaluated postoperatively by CT scans in order to assess the true incidence of pneumocephalus and subsequent development, if any, of tension pneumocephalus. This prospective survey shows that the postoperative incidence of intracranial air was 100%, while no progression towards tension pneumocephalus producing severe neurological deterioration was observed. It can thus be claimed that, although the sitting position may favour the development of tension pneumocephalus also other factors contribute to its pathogenesis. Finally, neither nitrous oxide nor temperature play any significant role in the development of this complication.

In a case of CO poisoning CT scanning revealed bilateral low density areas in the globi pallidi, associated with diffuse hypodensity of the white matter of the cerebral hemispheres. Serial scanning threw some light on the possible mechanism involved and appears to support the hypothesis of necrotic damage of vascular origin following brain edema. An attempt is made to correlate the pattern of CT abnormalities with clinical evolution.
Peripheral white blood cell (WBC) count was determined in 95 patients with ischemic cerebral infarction 3 days after the onset of the stroke. At this time, higher WBC counts were found in patients with more severe neurological impairment and larger infarct size. A relationship between increase of WBC count and poor clinical outcome was also demonstrated. The elevation of peripheral WBC count observed soon after cerebral infarction reflects the degree of the inflammatory response in the acute hase and seems to have a direct relationship with the extent of the local cerebral damage.

A child with microcephaly, facial dysmorphisms, seizures, and congenital cardiopathy is presented. On the basis of skull x-rays, electroencephalogram, transillumination of the head, and computed tomography (CT) scan, the diagnosis of semilobar holoprosencephaly was made. The heterogeneous etiology of the disorder is discussed in order to evaluate the recurrence risk. The usefulness of CT scan for the classification in the different types of holoprosencephaly is stressed.
Computerized tomography was performed in 31 patients presenting clinical signs of cerebellar degeneration. CT abnormalities consistent with cerebellar atrophy were found in all cases but one. Specific patterns of abnormality were found in olivo-ponto-cerebellar degeneration and in alcoholic atrophy. The CT findings in spino-cerebellar degeneration were varied, ranging from severe diffuse cerebellar atrophy to normality, possibly according to age and duration of symptoms.
