[Electrical impedance of the skin in hemiplegic patients].

Skin electrical impedance parameters have been calculated in 15 hemiplegic subjects and in 10 healty subjects in order to evaluate differences before and after physiokynesitheraphy. The first result put in evidence a significant reduction in the impedance of the hemiplegic subjects in comparison with normal subjects; after physiokinesitheraphy the values tend to become more like the normal ones. On the contrary, till now significant skin impedance differences between ill and healty side have not been registered.

Effect of solid detergent washing on values of skin electrical impedance.

We have studied the electrical behaviour of the skin on 20 volunteers, before and after cleaning with solid detergent. The aim was to study one of the possible variables of the measurements. The results have shown that the cleaning has globally reduced the electrical skin parameters of the forehead, without influencing other parts examined (dorsal and palmar surfaces of the hand). The result has been attributed to the elimination of the hydrolipidic film of the surface and in particular that of the sebum of the forehead. The data give an idea as to how to obtain more homogeneous final results, as well as studying the sebum production function.

Topographic variations of the skin impedence in the normal young adults.

In the normal young adults were studied electrical characteristics of the skin in five different regions. The results obtained have demonstrated presence of the topographic differences of the external resistance as well as capacity. It does not seem like that these differences can be correlated with the thickness at the corneal layer, but rather with the different glandular composition from one region to another and probably with the different hydration state of the skin. There were also demonstrated differences between sexes, characterized by the lower external resistance in males than in females.

Description of a method for the measurement of electric skin impedance.

A device for analysis of electric skin impedance has been build, which determines quantitatively the constituents of electrical skin model as proposed by Philipson. It measures impedance modulus and phase angle with different frequencies, then it calculates impedance skin locus on complex plane. In this pattern the choice of frequencies is not critical. It can work with two, three, or four electrodes. Precision achieved and great simplicity of use, allows it ideal for clinical applications, despite the theoretical complexity of measurements.

Neuroradiological treatment of carotid and vertebral fistulas and intracavernous aneurysms. Technical problems and results.

Thirty-three patients have been treated with balloon catheters since 1978. Debrun's detachable balloons were used in 31 and a Fogarty catheter in the other two. Problems were encountered from the introduction of the catheter to the detachment of the balloon. We have treated 21 fistulas between the internal carotid and cavernous sinus, 3 fistulas between the external carotid and jugular vein, 2 mixed fistulas between internal and external carotid and cavernous sinus, 2 vertebral fistulas and 5 intracavernous aneurysms. Delayed angiographic control has shown that the arterial axis remained patent in a high percentage of cases and that the formation of an asymptomatic pseudo-aneurysmal sac within the cavernous sinus is the rule. Long-term clinical follow-up has confirmed the angiographic results. In two patients neurological complications led to the patients' death.

Realization of a double biofeedback to control breathing activity.

A devise giving a double respiratory movements biofeedback signal has been build. The transducers are two mercury strain gauge, giving a linear electrical resistance change with length variations; they can be applied to the thorax and abdomen by belts, or simply fixed to any two parts of the thorax. The electrical signals are converted in acoustical signals: one like an air blow, the other like a siren: the frequencies of the signals are proportional to the movements amplitude: as a result the patient is informed simultaneously of the respiratory movements of two different sites and can easily control the relative amplitude.

Metabolism of metergoline in the rat.

[19,10-3H] Metergoline was administered orally to female rats and radioactive metabolites were recovered form urine and bile. Besides unchanged drug, the presence of 1-demethylmetergoline (II) was confirmed both in urine and bile. Two other urinary metabolites were identified, namely 8 beta-aminomethyl-6-methylergoline (IX) and 8 beta-acetylaminomethyl-6-methylergoline (VI). A third metabolite, 1,6-dimethyl-8 beta-aminomethylergoline (VIII), was identified only in bile. Beside these metabolites, further polar and so far unidentified biotransformation products are present both in bile and urine, accounting for about half of the radioactivity present in these excreta.

[Instrumentation and methods in policardiography (author's transl)].

Although policardiography has been in use for more than a century, only recently attention has been focused on instrumental and methodological problems of the technique. Among these, frequency response and time constant of the equipment are in first place. Time constant must be long enough to allow an accurate recording of the low and ultra-low frequency vibrations which are generated in the cardio-aorto-hemic system, in particular of those constituting the carotid pulse and the apexcardiogram. The authors stress the influence that incidental air leaks in the recording assembly, or type and size of the pickup device, have on the value of the time constant. Kinetocardiography seems preferable to apexcardiography in order to reproduce with higher fidelity absolute movements of the anterior thoracic wall in every single point.

4-Demethoxy-4-alkoxydaunorubicins.

The synthesis and the antitumor activities of a group of 4-demethoxy-4-alkoxydaunorubicins (VIII) are reported. The new compounds were found to have an activity equal or superior to that of daunorubicin, at somewhat higher doses.

Doxorubicin 14-ethers.

The synthesis and the antitumor activities of a group of doxorubicin (adriamycin) 14-ethers are reported. The new compounds were found to have an activity similar to that of daunorubicin, at somewhat higher doses, but inferior to that of doxorubicin.

[From ergot alkaloids to nicergoline/Chemical points of view (author's transl)].

The author reports the rationale of a line of research that has led to pharmacologically active ergoline derivatives from the more complex ergot alkaloids. Specific compounds showing oxytocic, alpha-adrenolytic and antiserotoninic activity were synthesized and the relationship between structure and activity discussed. Out of the compounds, 10-methoxy-1,6-dimethyl-ergoline-8 beta-methanol-(5-bromonicotinate) (nicergoline) was chosen as the most interesting product for a detailed further development.

Radioisotopic and synthetic studies related to caroxazone metabolism in man.

Labelled 2-oxo-2H-1,3-benzoxazine-3(4H)-acetamide (caroxazone), has been synthesized by condensing N-(2-hydroxylbenzyl/glycinamide with 14C phosgene. Metabolic studies were performed administering the labelled drug to man and recovering metabolites from the urines. Beside the unchanged drug, five metabolites were identified and confirmed by synthesis, namely (3,4-dihydro-3-carboxamidomethyl-2-oxo-2H-1,3-benzoxazin-4-yl)urea (IX), N-carboxamidomethyl o-hydroxymethylphenyl carbamate (V), 4-methoxy-2-oxo-2H-1,3-benzoxazine-3(4H)acetamide (VIIIa), 2-oxo-2H-1,3-benzoxazine-3(4H)acetic acid (III) and 4-hydroxy-2-oxo-2H-1,3-benzoxazine-3(4H)acetamide (IV).

Preparation and biological evaluation of 4-O-demethyldaunorubicin (carminomycin I) and of its 13-dihydro derivative.

A mutant strain of Streptomyces peucetius produced an anthracycline antibiotic whose structure has been established to be 4-O-demethyl-13-dihydrodaunorubicin (4), by application of spectroscopic methods and chemical degradation. A new synthesis of 4-O-demethyl-daunorubicin (carminomycin I, 2) starting from daunomycinone, together with the comparison of the antitumor activity of the anthracycline glycosides 2 and 4 are also reported.
