Transfer of information with brain extracts from donors to recipients in passive-avoidance behavior.

Experiments were conducted in a step-through, one-trail, passive-avoidance situation, in order to study the effect of crude or 10,000 dalton-ultrafiltered brain extracts, from trained donor rats, on the learning of the same behavior in naive or undertrained recipient rats. A positive transfer effect was consistently detectable in the latter, apparently related to consolidated learning, but not to the level of avoidance performance or of general activation in the donors. Temporal and cognitive requirements, for such an effect to occur, have been established with regard to donor-training and recipient-managing procedures. A tentative explanation of the transfer effect in the passive-avoidance behavior cannot disregard the possibility of material transmission of information pertaining to a response elicited by primary or secondary reinforcement. Such a response, although quite distinct from the somatomotor response, would be necessary to its acquisition but not to its expression.

Influence of social environment and of drugs on 3H-corticosterone uptake in various brain areas.

Through specific cytoplasmic-nuclear receptors, brain appears as a target tissue for corticosteroids in their affecting neuroendocrine and behavioural activities. 3H-corticosterone (3H-B) uptake in various brain areas of differentially reared mice was studied in order to ascertain possible differences which might be connected to the different patterns of behavioural, neurochemical and stress responses. In 4-day adrenalectomized mice 1-h 3H-B uptake was higher in grouped than in isolated ones. Prlonged social stress in the grouped mice before adrenalectomy remarkably reduced 3H-B uptake. In 4-hour adrenalectomized dominant males, 4-h 3H-B uptake was higher than in submissive ones. All drugs tested (chlorpromazine, fluanisone, morphine, methergoline, naloxone, propranolol) affected 3H-B uptake. Knowledge of the interactions between behavioural manipulations or drugs and brain corticosteroid-receptors can improve the approach to the regulatory mechanisms of the hypothalamo-hypophyso-adrenal axis also in relation with behavioural phenomena.

The action of bombesin on gastric secretion of the chicken.

The natural tetradecapeptide bombesin at a threshold dose of 3--5 ng/kg/min i.v. stimulates gastric secretion in the chicken with either an acute or a chronic proventriculus fistula; this effect is blocked by atropine. The occurrence of tachyphylaxis in the acute, but not in the chronic preparation, and the inhibition of the response by proventriculus acidification, in the presence of an intact sensitivity to caerulein -- a directly stimulating agent -- support the hypothesis of an indirect mechanism of action of bombesin, namely the release of endogenous gastrin, as well as of the existence of gastrin also in the chicken.
